Detroit Histadrut to Honor
Israel Labor Federation's Chief

Charles Milan, is urging the
prompt purchase of tree cer-
tificates for New Year greet-
ings.
According to Milan, the
local JNF office is now ac-
cepting preferred lists for
New Year's greetings, and
issuing tree certificates at the
proper time as New Year
greetings.
There is an added advan-
tage to order trees now for
the new year, submitting
greeting lists as early as
possible, Milan said. "People
who do so will pay only $2.50
per tree as the price is slated
to rise to $3 per tree on
Sept. 1."

A 40-year veteran in the
Israel labor movement,
Meshel became acting secre-
tary-general of the huge
trade union federation short-
ly before the Yom Kippur
War broke out. Meshel was
elected to the highest post
of the 1,200,000-member His-
tadrut in March.
Born in Pinsk in 1912,
Meshel came to Israel in
1933. He lived on a kibutz
and later became a construc-
tion worker in Tel Aviv.
Soon after his arrival, he
was elected to workers' com-
mittees, and ever since he
has held important posts in
Histadrut.

the civilian employes at Brit-
ish military camps in south-
ern 'Palestine, Egypt and the
western desert. In 1945, he
was elected secretary of the
metal workers' union and
became a member of the Tel
Aviv Labor Council. In 1960,
Meshel was elected to the
Trade Union Department of
the Histadrut Executive, and
in 1960 he was named to the
Central Executive Bureau.
In 1961, Meshel was chos-
en chairman of the trade un-
ion department and elected
to the Central Committee of
Mapai. He became a mem-
ber of the secretariat of the
enlarged Israel Labor Party
in 1964 and was elected dep-
uty secretary-general of His-
tadrut. He also was head of
Histadrut's social security
center and the Arab workers
department.

The Metropolitan Detroit
Bnai Brith Council announces
that several members of the
local men's council were el-
ected to District 6 offices.
They were Herman Kasoff,
vice president; Harry Pear-
son and Alfred Bounin, court
of appeals; Sol Moss, Harold
Jaffa and Louis Segel, nat-
ional board of governors; Ar-
thur Schott, Anti-Defamation
League; Bernard Panush,
adult Jewish education; Har-
ry Katz, career and counsel-
ing; Nathan Rubenstein, Hil-
lel Foundation; and Louis
Weber, Bnai Brith Youth Or-
ganization,
Guest speakers at the elec-
tion meeting were David
Blumberg, international pres-
ident of Bnai Brith; and Sen.
Hubert H. Humphrey (D.
Minn.)

Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Tamler
of Sherwood Ave., Oak Park,
are planting a Jewish Na-
tional Fund Forest in Israel.
According to Tamler, the
final decision as to the loca-
tion is still to be made, but
he and his wife plan to visit
Israel soon to dedicate the
Dorothy and Irwin Tamler
Forest.
Tamler, active in commun-
ity affairs, is a past president

Mrs. Dora Bachman of
Oxley Rd., Southfield, has
just established a forest in
the John F. Kennedy Peace
Forest, outside Jerusalem,
that is to be known as the
Max and Dora Bachman
Family Forest.
According to Mrs Bach-
man, she and her late hus-
band visited Israel in 1968
and were both determined to
plant a forest upon their re-
turn to this country. Mr.
Bachman died Aug. 14, 1969,

ning pitcher in the Metropoli-
tan Detroit Bnai Brith Coun-
cil men's all-star softball
game as he helped the Amer-
ican League beat the Nation-
al League by a score of 18-7.
Jaffa pitched four no-run,
shut-out innings.
Six local teams will go to
the Bnai Brith Invitational
Softball Tournament Aug. 10
and 11 in Columbus.
