LAWYERS U.S. Students Study Issues Vital to Jewry Mythical Likud Cabinet ROSEN NEW YORK — A team of students in the social sciences and law has joined the staff of the Institute for Jewish Policy Planning and Re- search of the Synagogue Council of America for the summer, to investigate sev- eral issues currently con- fronting American Jewry. The institute, chaired by Philip M. Klutznick of Chi- cago, was established two years ago by the Synagogue Council of America, which is the coordinating body for the rabbinic and congregational agencies of Orthodox, Con- servative and Reform Juda- ism. By MOSHE RON Jewish News Jerusalem Correspondent TEL AVIV—For the first time there is high tension in the Likud-parties. The lead- ers of the Liberal Party, Dr. Elinelach Rimalt, Arye Dul- zin, Simcha Erlich and Josef Tamir, have criticized openly their party member general Arie' Sharon. This criticism comes after Defense Minister Shimon Peres and the chief of the general staff, Mota Gur, have offered Gen. Sharon to return to active service in the Israeli Army and abandon his political ca- reer and Knesset mandate. Rumors said that it was even promised to Sharon that he would become the next chief of staff of the Israeli army. Parties and newspapers voiced strong criticism against the return of Sharon in the army, often he had urged soldiers not to carry out orders of their officers to remove Jewish settlers from Nablus. The leader of the Liberal Party, of which Shar- on is a member, criticized this attitude of Sharon strong- ly and also the personal at- tacks which Sharon had di- rected against some leaders of the party. Dr. Rimalt said at a meet- ing of the executive bureau of the Liberal Party: "There can be a discussion about each theme, but there must be a limit to the expressions. If there would be expressions like those of Sharon, we could not sit together around the same table. We cannot live with such a style." Dr. Rimalt criticized the endeav- or to settle in Nablus without a permission from the author- ities. It seems, the Liberal Party would be happy, if Sharon would abandon his political career, quit the Knesset and return to the army. There is no "peace" be- tween the leader of the Free "Center Shmuel Tamir and Li- kud. A while ago there ap- peared an advertisement in the Israeli newspapers about a "shadow-cabinet", if Likud would obtain the power. Butman, director of the college and university section of the Lubavitcher Youth Organization, was scheduled to leave for Europe and Israel Monday on a spe- cial mission to strengthen the relations between the youth organization in the United States and Israel. Rabbi Butman said he would also seek to intensify the Lubavitcher Rebbe's five- point "mitzva campaign" to have all Jews put on tefilin, have mezuzot and prayer books in their houses, give charity and study the Torah daily. He said he would also buy mezuzot in Israel because of the shortage of ritually ac- ceptable m e z u z o t in the United States. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Agency. Arik Sharon was proposed as minister for the police, Ezer Weizman as de- fense minister and Shmuel Tamir as foreign minister. ROSH HASHONA This advertisement aroused a storm in Likud. The lead- ers of Herut defined it as a provocation against Mena- hem Begin. They suspected Shmuel Tamir as initiator of the advertisement. The col- league of Tamir in the Free Center, Elieser Shostak, did not come to his aid in the sharp debate in Likud-Execu- tive. He claimed that he was hoarse and could not speak, but in an interview he ex- pressed his dissatisfaction with the activity of Tamir toward Likud and stressed, that he thinks Menahem Be- gin as leader of Likud. The leaders of Gahal (Her- ut and the liberals) do not lick honey with partners like Arie Sharon and Shmuel Ta- mir in the Likud. The contro- versies and suspicions within Likud do not strengthen the opposition against the gov- ernment of Yizhak Rabin, though this has lost outstand- ing political leaders like Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan, Pinhas Sapir and Abba Eban.
