Messiah in Jewish Tradition
The messiah or "Anointed
(King)", is a postbiblical
concept, though there is a
biblical prehistory of messi-
anism. At the height of Da-
vid's power, there appeared
the doctrine that the Lord
had chosen David and his
descendants to reign over
Israel and also over alien
peoples to the end of time.
With the collapse of David's
empire after the death of
Solomon, there arose the
hope that the House of David
would come to power again.
Later, cites the Encyclo-
pedia Judaica, the prophet
Isaiah shifted the emphasis
from the perpetuity of the
dynasty to the qualities of
the future king: distinguished
by his zeal for justice, he
will be charismatically en-
dowed for sensing the rights
and wrongs of a case and for
performing justice.
Messianic figures of dif-
ferent types begin to appear
in the time of the Second
Temple. Thus in the Dead
Sea Scrolls, Encyclopedia
Judaica states, there are
three messianic figures rep-
resenting the three main
functions of the ideal Jewish
state, namely kingdom,
priesthood and prophecy.
Later on the importance of
the Davidic Messiah in Ju-
daism weakened or caused
the disappearance of the
other messianic figures.
In rabbinic thought, the
Messiah is the king who will
redeem and rule Israel at the
climax of human history and
the instrument by which the
kingdom of God will be es-
tablished. The Messiah was
expected to attain for Israel
the idyllic blessings of the
prophets : he was to defeat
the enemies of Israel, restore
the people to the Land, rec-
oncile them with God, and
introduce a period of spiritual
and physical bliss; he was
to be prophet, warrior, king,
judge, and teacher of the
Torah.
In the Middle Ages, a vast
messianic literature devel-
oped. Messianic speculation
and attempts to find the date
for the beginning of the re-
demption were a .constant
feature of Jewish culture up
to nearly modern times.
Then, the doctrine of the
Messiah was reinterpreted.
in two ways : it substituted
the belief in a messianic age
for the belief in a personal
Messiah, and it severed from
its tradition associations
with a return of the exiles to
Zion, as the whole world
would become perfected and
monotheism would become
the religion of all men. This
last concept, however,
changed again with the rise
of anti-Semitism, the Holo-
caust, and, on the positive
side, Zionism.-
Today's Orthodox Jewry re-
tains unimpaired the tradi-
tional doctrine of the Mes-
siah of the House of David
who will reign in Jerusalem
and rebuild the Temple.
Some Orthodox Jews see in
the creation of the state of
Israel the beginning of the
redemption, while some see
in the state a substitution of
purely human redemption for
the redeemer sent by God.
Among modern Jewish think-
ers there is a tendency to
invoke once again the tradi-
tional idea of messianism as
a direct, divine intervention,
