THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Trifa Alleged to Have Imported Former Iron Guardists to U. S. From S. America A series of articles on "The Nazis Next Door" in the large-circulation New York Daily News alleges that Bis- hop Valerian Trifa of Grass Lake, Mich., "recently im- ported some former Iron Guardis ts from South America, where they had been hiding out since World War II." Trifa, head of the Roma- nian Orthodox Episcopate of America, is described as "the alleged leader of a neo- Nazi network now flourish- ing in the United States" in the fifth of a series by Paul Meskil. The articles culminated a month-long investigation of alleged Nazi war criminals by Meskil, who also sought the assistance of The Jewish News for information on Trifa and his followers. Trifa is the subject of new inves- tigations by the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the FBI. The latter is probing Iron Guard activities in America. According to Meskil's in- formants, Trifa "installed Iron Guard veterans as priests — although almost none of them had theological training — in his churches around the country." Meskil said documented evidence shows that Trif a: "Regularly recruits new members for his Iron Guard cells from among his church members and newly arrived Romanian immigrants" and "Maintains contacts with wanted war criminals in Spain and South America, including the former Iron Guard commander, Horia Sima," who lives in a palatial home in Madrid. One of Trifa's closest aides is Stelian Stanicel, a De- troiter who is a former Iron Guard officer. Reportedly trained by the Gestapo in Germany, Stanicel was sen- tenced to death in absentia by a Romanian court in 1941. "At least 20 other Trif a henchmen were sentenced in absentia to long prison terms for their roles in an Iron Guard bloodbath that took the lives of several hundred Romanian civilians, many of them Jews," wrote Meskil. Meskil also quoted Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal as saying that a few well-to-do CANS Organizers Disband Food Distribution Program as JFCS Gives Increased Aid to Needy The CANS program is over. A spokeman for the volun- teer food delivery service, founded eight months ago to provide assistance to Detroit Jewish families in financial distress, said the last deliv- ery will take place Sunday. With the Jewish Family and Children's Service pro- viding increased assistance to families on limited in- come—and in some cases providing monthly subsidies —the CANS program is no longer needed, said Sheila Ordin, who spearheaded the volunteer effort under the auspices of Cooperative Council. Although CANS' is being disbanded, Cooperative Coun- cil will continue sponsorship of the "We Are Concerned" program, said Mrs. Ordin, chairman of the service arm of the League of Jewish Women's Organizations. The We Are Concerned program will spearhead efforts in the area of transportation and other needs, she said. In a thank-you letter to some 388 organizations and Individuals who assisted with CANS, Mrs. Ordin said that Cooperative Council will "work closely and in full co- operation with the Jewish Family and Children's Serv- ice, who shares our concern for those in need of financial and counseling service." The letter was addressed "To you, who carried cans to your meetings. To you, who carried those cans to the Bnai Brith offices. To you, who gave us money to POE pd poi adv buy the food needed that was not donated. To you, who came to carry, pack and put away the food. To you, who came early Sunday mornings to make the deliveries. To you, who have become Wally involved by adopting families. To you, who backed us and advised ns and helped us in many unknown ways." Since November, there have been 1,225 deliveries of food, Mrs. Ordin said. Close to 525.000 was spent both on food purchases and subsidies, in addition to donations of canned goods. Most of that amount was contributed by individuals. -Mrs. Ordin said that 116 of the families assisted by CANS have been given vary- ing forms of aid by JFCS, and some 50 are getting monthly subsidies from the agency. In a letter to the CANS recipients, the Cooperative Council, said that those who have had no contact with JFCS but are in need should contact Helen` Samberg at JFCS',. DI 1-5959. "They are prepared to discuss your situation with you and to de- termine how they can be most helpful to you," the letter said. "As friends, we hope we have been of help to you and we thank you for the coop- eration you have given us and the welcome you have given to our volunteers when making deliveries." Coordinators of the program with Mrs. Ordin were Doro- thy Cole, Eve Gordon and Marilyn S h a k n e. Barney Kasoff did all shopping and kept the shelves stocked. Dennis Rice, director of the Bnai Brith, was cited for pro- viding the storage and dis- tribution area in the Bnai Brith building. right-wing extremists are re- sponsible for the Nazi migra- tion to America. Wiesenthal told Meskil: "The question is, who was the sponsor for these people? We have an idea it was one man (in each nationality group) who brought all these people' to the United States— one Lithuanian, especially and one Latvian." Meskil added: "Also one Romanian is believed respon- sible for importing at least 50 members of the Nazi-like Iron Guard . . ." He said professional Nazi trackers and war crimes re- searchers believe that from 500 to 2,000 Nazi and pro- Nazi war criminals have found haven in the U.S. Other alleged war crimi- nals named in Meskil's series included Karl Linnas, sen- tenced to death in absentia for war crimes in Estonia, where he was commander Factory Sealed, Factory Fresh • IBM • 8—Friday, July 26, 1974 After the war, he moved to TXPEWRITERS Jordan, where he became a citizen and adopted an Arabic name. ANDY BLAU In BIRMINGHAM at Jewish Press Absent From NY Book Fair NEW YORK (JTA)—More than 275 small book and magazine publishers of con- troversial and special interest material displayed their wares at a first New York book fair, but its coordinator insisted that the virtual total absence of Jewish publica- tions had not been due to any policy of exclusion. - The three-day event at the New York Cultural Center attract- ed some 10,000 visitors. Only one Jewish publica- tion, Jewish Currents, a left- wing periodical, was repre- sented at the fair, which wel- comed literary, political, feminist and minority publi- cations of all viewpoints. There were no exhibits - by pro - Arab or anti - Zionist groups but some publishers — such as the Trotskyist Pathfinder Press and the Communist International Publishers—presented books and pamphlets with a hard- line anti-Zionist bias. "We certainly didn't de- liberately exclude the Jewish press from the fair," Jackie Eubanks, a librarian at the Brooklyn College Liberation Library and fair coordinator, told Sue Macy, Jewish Tele- graphic Agency reporter. "In fact, we did send notices to various Jewish organizations announcing the fair," she said.
