Anti-Zionist Editorial in Student Paper Won't Affect Haifa U. Ties MILWAUKEE (JTA)—An editorial in the student nevv._ paper at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, assail- ing plans for an exchange re- lationship between the uni- versity and the University of Haifa and describing Israel as "a colonial-settler state," will have no effect on those plans, the Wisconsin univer- sity chancellor has declared. Chancellor Werner Baum said UWM would continue "to explore the proposed re- lationship" and that he hoped - specific plan would be ady within a few months, according to the Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle. Baum said the decision would be made on educational, not political grounds. The editorial, written by Tom Maurer, denounced the university administration's approach to the proposed tie with the Israeli school and its "serious political implica- tions." No longer is there talk of weariness, or of exhaus- tion, as there was last winter. "This is as it should be, for in fact there is nothing to be tired of. We can hardly be tired of life. We surely cannot be tired of the Jew- ish values and visions that give our lives meaning. We most certainly cannot be tired of the miracle that is Israel or of our newly forti- fied Jewishness. Maurer has written earlier editorials supporting the Pal- estinian terrorists. Isaac Lakritz, a member of the student board of the Jew- ish Student Service-Hillel on campus, said "Maurer has been living in a New Left dream world for the past five or six years." Liakritz said he doubted the editorial would have any sig- nificant impact on the stu- de . _t body which he called "78 per cent apathetic, with no opinions at all. He said about 10 per cent of the other students might agree with the pro-Arab anti- Israel tone of the editorial. Chancellor Baum said the proposed exchange program would be "entirely volun- tary." With this deep- ened sense of unity, a new vigor and strength is emerg- ing. "At the Jewish Agency Assembly in Jerusalem last month, we sought and ob- tained, for the first time, ex- pressions of increased giving from delegates to this inter- national meeting. "Further indications of similar understanding and commitment are essential if we are to build a climate of confidence and strength in our communities.
