Each time we visit this all-around entertainment capital of the world, we never cease to be amazed at the fantastic veri- table fairy land . . . This unbelievable world of realis- tic fantasy continues to cap- ture the most wildest of all imaginations. WHEN EX-DETROITER SID HUDSON (Hodash many years ago), was in Detroit and told us about the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, he certainly wasn't exagger- ating! . We just had to see for ourselves. ON THE DOORS OF every room and suite here at the MGM Grand Hotel is a star . . . and throughout the huge edifice are pictures of famous movie performers who made Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer king of them all . . . It's almost a city in itself . . . only thing lacking is a mayor . . . There are two doctors on the premises, a security police force of 110 (bigger than some small cities) and 4,000 employes . . . of these, about 55 are former Detroiters. AFTER TWO YEARS ON the drawing board, MGM Grand was built within a year ... . and had its grand opening in December 1973 . . . The casino, with its 1,100 employes, is 11/2 times the size of a regulation football field . . . Ex-Detroiter Char- lie Resnik, casino host, has been here since its opening, and Stu Segal is one of the pit bosses . . . All told, MGM Grand takes up over a 1,000,. 000 square feet and has 2,029 rooms, five restaurants, com- plete arcade of shops, jai alai, tennis, two swimming pools, private club on the 26th floor, three live enter- tainment centers and a movie theater that is now playing "Captains Courageous" with Lionel Barrymore. LOOKING AT THIS MAM- MOTH monster of beauteous wonderment, one would ex- pect to find a hardened guy at the helm . . . but when Sid Hudson took us into Morrie Jaeger's office, we met the youngest casino manager in the world . . . and perhaps one of the nicest . . . At only 44, Morrie had opened the Riviera, Stardust and Caesar's Palace previous to being brought as the MGM Grand door opener . . . If another casino offer comes his way, Morrie says he definitely will not leave here to open it . . After opening Caesar's he promised wife Helen that he wouldn't leave, but when it was sold, EVERYONE IS A WINNER. He re- mained until his guarantee to stay so long was up . . . and then, to the good fortune of MGM Grand, became its vice president and casino manager . . . Morrie calls himself a "Jewish cowboy" . . . not because he walks the MGM lion around, which he does, but he and Helen own a ranch in Las Vegas' Para- dise Valley . . near Rabbi Phillip Schnaison's Temple Beth Shalom, of which they are members . . Their son, Mitch, will be 18 years old in October and Notre Dame is already after him for his football prowess . . . Mitch's ambition is to become a vet- erenarian. LAST MONTH, a large 1,100-people dinner was given for the United Jewish Ap- peal, with everything being donated, including the ser- vices of Theodore Bikel, by the MGM Grand. WHEN MANY FOLKS put a question mark on MGM Grand's chances because of its massiveness and ultra high overhead, Morrie proved them poor prophets . . . The first quarter of operation showed a cool profit of $7,500,000. AS A PERSON, they seldom came any grander than MGM Grand's young casino manager, Morrie Jaeger . . . He's Mr. Nice Guy all the way! HEIGHT OF EGO-MANIA . . . was the Detroit column- ist at a phone paging herself . . . as reported by a guest standing nearby. SPENT A LOT OF enjoy- able time with Kay and bar- rister Jimmy Saperstein • . . a wonderful couple, lots of fun and a joy to be with. OUR FIRST NIGHT in Las Vegas was with Sid Hudson, Turk Prujansky and Shirley Feldman for the premier opening of Shirley Mac- Laine's show . . _then on to the Sands for Milton Berle ... and into the lounge where Shirley spilled a drink and Willie "Buffalo" Ehrlich sat in the saturated seat. CORNED BEEF SAND- WICH at The Deli in MGM Grand is $2.65, but besides •a double whopping amount of good meat, you get potato salad, sauerkraut, pickle and dill tomato. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT ... excellent food and excellent entertainment wrapped up into a package makes Las Vegas quite unbeatable. WITNESSED A REAL pro in action when Shirley Mac- LaMe came on stage for her "If They Could See Me Now" show in the Celebrity Room at MGM Grand . . It was her first return to the stage after a great motion picture success and her singing and dancing were sensational ... The microphones kept going on and off, but it didn't stop the wonderful Shirley from attaining her height of show biz greatness . . . Milton Berle at the Sands Copa Room was his usual funny self with a lot of the old TV slapstick comedy . . He'll have two ABC Wide World of Entertainment specials this fall . . . Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme in the Circus Maximus Theater of Caesar's Palace were great . . . and (Continued on Page 28) 26—Friday, July 26, 1974 THE DETROIT -JEWISH NEWS 7041 ■ iii****** +4 L arry $t- Tit* ADAM W 4tirmr INVITE YOU TO ENJOY '• OUR ORIGINAL QUALITY • Juicy B-8412 Ribs • Tender Tasty Chicken • Tangy Pizza • Assorted Seafood ' 1 ORDERS TAKEN ALL OCCASION PARTIES ♦ V ♦ • DINNER , SNACKS, SMORGASBORD AND SPECIAL IN-HOME* CATERING, SERVED IN OPEN FLAME CHAFING DIMES{. 25226 GREENFIELD RD. A great restaurant, however, goes one step further. Such establishments insist that the right wines—the perfect wines —for each dish are always available for their patrons. Therefore, we at L'Auberge give our cellars the same care and attention as we do our kitchen. For truly, if either were to fall below our standards, both would suffer. We will not allow this to happen. Come to CAuberge ...and discover a great restaurant. Somerset Inn, Big Beaver Road, east of Coolidge, Troy, Michigan 48084/Phone (313) 643-7800
