Australian Jewish Community
Responds to Govt Change

JERUSALEM — Australian
Jewry is beginning the pro-
cess of transforming itself
into a more alert and politi-
cally sophisticated commu-
nity — its new awareness
arising out of the changes in
the government's attitude
toward Israel.
Charlotte Jacobson, chair-
man of the World Zionist
Organization, returning from
a trip to Australia, said that
the Jews of Australia have
had a shock, and Jewish
community life will never be
the same.
Prime Minister Laborite
Gough Whitman embarked
upon a course calculated to
make Australia the leader of
the Far Eastern bloc, lead-
ing him to an anti-American
and anti-Israel stance.
Many of Australian's 70,-
000 Jews have relatives liv-
ing in Israel and about 500
make aliya annually. In the
wake of the Yom Kippur

war, the Jews of Australia
were able to raise an addi-
tional $13,000,000 above the
regular campaign income of
$3,000,000.
Since Australian policy had
always been pro-Israel, the
Jewish community is not
geared to political activity.
As a result of the move
taken by the government,
however, the Jews of Aus-
tralia have taken a new look
at themselves and their or-
ganizational structure.
Local Jewish institutions,
including the United Israel
Appeal, the Jewish National
Fund and Bnai Brith, are
flourishing.

'Hear the word of the Lord,
0 you nations, an announce
it in distant coastlands; say,
`He who scattered Israel
shall gather him, –and shall
keep him as a shepherd
keeps his flock. — Jeremiah
31:10.
