Lubavitcher 'Students Take Mitzva Campaign Throughout State Armed with what one rabbi called "the Rebbe's spiritual adrenalin," two young stu- dents from the Lubavitcher Center in Brooklyn are carrying the message of Torah throughout Michigan. An annual campaign en- couraged by Rabbi Mena- chem M. Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the "mis- sion" into small communities is an effort to acquaint Jews with the commandments, ac- cording to the two young men who are stationed here for three weeks. Joseph Isaac Pevzner, 21, and Mendel Okunov, 22, will go from the Detroit 'suburbs to the upper tip of Lower Michigan, and even in- to the Upper Peninsula, in search of Jews. They are one of 100 pairs of students who will spend three or four weeks in the program. "You would be surprised at how the Rebbe's power reaches into the smallest community," said Pevzner, a veteran of three summer "campaigns." Last year, when he was in New Orleans, a Lubavitcher follower in Jackson, Miss., asked Pevz- ner and his partner to come down for a visit. Their host showed them his prized pos- session: a letter from the Rebbe. For Okunov, a native of Samarkand, this mission is a unique experience, but one he can well understand: he, too, came from an isolated Jewish community. His was one of 100 Lubavitcher fami- lies who made their way from Samarkand to Israel in the past four years.. His father and sister live in Lod, where a large group of Lubavitcher Soviet Jews has settled; when he has com- pleted his seminary studies, he plans to return there. 1.11• ■■••■■■ •,.... Mendel Okunov, left, and Joseph Isaac Pevzner, two students from Brooklyn's Lubavitcher seminary, are en route to Michigan com- munities to bring the Luba- vitchers' message of Torah. Okunov holds a photograph of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. *' * While Okunov's parents had tried to make aliya as long ago as 40 years, it was impossible to do so until re- cently, he said. Nevertheless, because of the closeness of the small community of Lubavitcher adherents, spiri- tual life was not poor. His own experience as a Sovet Jew has a special appeal to the new community of Rus- sian immigrants in the De- troit area. Okunov and Pevzner be- lieve that no matter how far- flung the Jewish community, "Torah and mitzvos unite us. The Rebbe says there's no such thing as 'Orthodox, Conservative and Reform. We're all Jews.' " They have been based, so far, in Detroit suburbs (on Sunday, they spent four hours at the Oak Park Muni- cipal Park, showing how to lay tefillin and distributing literature). For the next two weeks, they will go further afield. Pevzner said they are well received in small communi- ties, where the local rabbi usually is their "contact man" with the Jewish popu- lace. "Actually, the smaller communities are very nice to us," said Pevzner. "They are happy to see another Jew." Their mission comes dur- ing the intensive "mitzva campaign" launched by the Lubavitcher R e b b e. The campaign calls for adher- ence to five mitzvot, includ- ing the mounting of appro- priate mezuzot on every doorpOst, for daily reading from -the holy books and for the laying of tefillin. On their visits into Jewish homes, the two young men check' out the mezuzot and, if necessary, mount new ones they carry with them. Rabbi Dovid Segal of the Mishkan Israel Lubavitcher Center said, "Most people think if you're a Jew at heart, that's enough. These young people bring the mes: sage that belief must be strengthened by practice." Rabbi Segal said the Luba- vitcher movement has been felt in many unexpected areas. "During the (Yom Kippur) war, the Israel army let us set up a printing press .on the other side of the Suez Canal. Then we could say that• we had been victorious there, too. 7 IF YOU TURN THE 'VW UPSIDE DOWN YOU WON'T FIND A FINER WINE THAN Weylaerd, Milan Wineries, Detroit, Mich.
