Lord Chalfont, a former Times correspondent and former minister of state at the foreign office in Harold Wilson's first administration, asked President Sadat about prospects of peace in the Middle East, and Sadat replied: "I am ready for a peace agreement with Israel". Asked if he was ready to recognize Israel's right to exist, Sadat replied: "I have accepted Resolu- tion 242, which includes a recognition of the existence of the state of Israel, and this answers your question. I was ready for peace two years ago, and I am ready now. There is only one point on which I must insist. Asked about his attitude to terrorism, the president of Egypt replied: "I am against terrorism and vio- lence. But put yourself in the place of the Palestinians. Let us put the real problem on the table and solve it. There are a million Arab refugees living in tents; what do you expect from them in their situation?" At this point, Sadat, to prove how much he was against violence, said that it was his objection to violence that saved the QE H (Queen Elizabeth) which carried 590 American Jews to Israel for the 25th anniversary. "I personally", he said, "countermanded an order, given an Arab leader. I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. when I was sure that the captain of our submarine, who had the order to tor- pedo the QE II, had re- ceived my order, and the Egyptian submarine was on its way back to Alexandria." (Sadat did not name the Arab leader, and Lord Chal- font stated here that Sadat had not told him the name of the Arab leader even pri- vately, but most people as- sumed it was Qadaffi of Libya. President Sadat added that a solution for the problem of the Palestinians was pos- sible in his view. During t h e interview, Sadat made the astonishing statement that he had never been worried even for a sin- gle moment about the pres- ence of Israelis west of the Suez Canal. He said: "This was a propaganda move by Israel. I had five divisions on the east bank, and I was not worried at all." Toward the end of the in- terview, Sadat frankly ad- mitted that he had been an admirer of Hitler. "I was fascinated with Hitler and I admired the way he rebuilt Germany. We believed in a German victory, and we were ready to fight on the side of the Germans. We sent the Germans a plan of British disposition, but it never reached them. "I was, as a result, sentenced to three years in a British concen- tration camp." The same evening, Inde- pendent Television showed a film of the Egyptian crossing of the Suez on Oct. 6, 1973. This was not the actual event, but a recon- struction for the benefit of television cameras, using live ammunition at the cost of 500,000 pounds sterling. The British commentator, Keith Hatfield, an experi- enced war correspondent, said: "Despite some chaotic situations, the Egyptians did cross the canal in 45 min- utes, with the help of Rus- sian pontoons. There were only 1,000 Israelis on the other side, and nobody fired back at them. In the end, the Israelis ended up with more territory than they had held before the Yom Kippur War, and the 3rd Egyptian Army was surrounded by an Is- raeli force on the west bank of the canal." Shulamit Aloni Named by Time as One of Future New Leaders NEW YORK (JTA)—Time, the weekly news magazine, has picked two Israelis — Shulamit Aloni and Gad Yaa- cobi — among 150 men and women from 50 countries who seem likely to become the world's new leaders. In naming the 150 individ- uals, Time noted that the central requirement for sel- ection was that "a person have, or seem capable of having in the future, signifi- cant or social impact." Only those age 45 or younger were eligible for selection. Mrs. Aloni, 45, is the lead- er of the Citizens Rights Par- ty and a member of Knesset, and Yaacobi, 39, is the min- ister of transport and a mem- ber of Knesset. Both are also members of Israel's cabinet. Time described Yaacobi as "cool, intellectual and prag- matic." Mrs. Aloni was des- sribed as having earned a reputation "as a free-wheel- ing champion of women's rights and consumerism." Others included in the list are: King Hussein of Jordan; Abdul Salam Jalloud, prime minister of Libya; Ahmed Zaki Yamani, petroleum min- ister of Saudi Arabia; and Senator James Abourezk of South Dakota (well-known for his pro-Arab views); Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman of New York (who has spoken out for the rights of Soviet Jews and has re- cently criticized the State Department for its laxity in dealing with former Nazi war criminals.: "'Mk There is a difference!
