A. Edward Barit, presi-
dent of the former Hudson
Motor Car Co. from 1936 to
1955, died Sunday at age 83.
Mr. Barit started at Hudson,
precursor of American Mo-
tors, in 1909. He joined as
a stenographer and worked
his way up to president, re-
tiring in 1955. He had been
an economic advisor to
President Roosevelt a n d
served in many automotive
and government capacities.
A native of Jersey City,
he came to Detroit in 1904.
For many years he was a
member of Temple Beth El
and was supportive of Jewish
charities.
Surviving are a son, Robert
of Bermuda; a daughter,
Mrs. June Reinhold; a broth-
er, Arthur; and 10 grandchil-
dren.
Nate Goldman, 75.

Nathan (Nate) Goldman,
founder in 1950 and president
of Sofas Inc. and Tradition
House furniture firms, died
July 13 at age 75.
Mr. Goldman, 16210 Oxley,
Southfield, was in the furni-
ture field for 50 years. He
was a member'of the Detroit
Board of Commerce, Furni-
ture Club of Detroit and
Mosacic Lodge of the Ma-
sons. He was a native of
Sault Ste. Marie.
Survivors are his wife,
Dorothy; a daughter, MrS.
Estelle Trubow; a brother,
David Gormar; four grand-
children and three great-

JOHANNESBURG, (JTA)
-Morris Mauerberger, one
of South Africa's leading in-
dustrialists and philanthro-
pists, died in Cape Town,
July :10 at age 84.
He played a major part in
developing the local textile
industry and had other busi-
ness interests. He established
the Mauerberger Foundation
in Israel to sponsor higher
education and a chair at the
Haifa Technion.
Mr. Mauerberger founded
a school of dentistry and a
chair of ophthalmology at
the Uniyersity of Cape Town.
Mrs. Ruth Leventyn, a
native Detroiter who was a
public school teacher in New
York for more than 10 years,
died July 11 at age 51. She
was a resident of Greenwich,
Conn,
Mrs. Leventyn, a Phi Beta
Kappa graduate of Hunter
College, left Detroit in 1951,
when she was married.
Mrs. Leventyn was a mem-
ber of Temple Sholom and
its sisterhood and Hadassah
in Greenwich.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Dr. Harry; her mother,
Mrs. Dora Nisenbaum of De-
troit; a brother, Jack Nisen-
baum of Woodland Hills,
Calif.; and four sisters, Mrs.
Harold (Bertha) Van Dine,
Mrs. Irving (Sally) August,
Mrs. Robert (Madeline) Shul-
man and Mrs. Willi a m
(Michele) Gamburd, all of
Detroit; nieces and nephews.
