DOE SN 'T A
CANTONESE-AMERICAN
RESTAURANT. _.
With This Coupon
cu
according to Rabbi Shlomo
Balter of Cong. Shaare Zedek.
Senior Citizens Club com-
mittees help prepare the
weekly luncheons, classes in
Hebrew current events and
Bible, and arts and crafts
activities.
Entertainment is mostly
from student volunteers from
the Cantors Institute or the
rabbinical school of the Jew-
ish Theological Seminary,
and from Barnard College
and Columbia University.
Singing, dancing, story tell-
ing, films, discussions and
occasional trips and picnics
also are part of the program.
From 1 to 4 p.m., mem-
bers and others from the
community generally meet
with lawyers, tax account-
ants and social workers who
offer a free legal and tax
counseling service initiated
by the American Jewish
Congress.
Members prepare and edit
the Shaare Zedek-JASA Jour-
nal. The Jewish Association
for Services to the Aged, an
affiliate of the Federation of
Jewish Philanthropies covers
staff.
The average age of the
participants has been 65, and
many more participants are
women than men. Most are
not poor, other than in com-
panionship and social activi-
ties for which the program
was organized.
The program won a Solo-
mon Schechter award for so-
cial action of the United Syna-
gogue of America, the asso-
ciation of Conservative con-
gregations.
At the start of the project,
substantial help was provid-
ed by CONCERN, an organi-
zation of Jewish academi-
cians in the area created in
response to the discovery
that as many as 30,000 eld-
erly Jews lived in the area
whose needs were not being
met by the organized Jewish
community. Trips and pic-
nics for the members are
sponsored by a local Bnai
Brith lodge, Rabbi Baiter
said.
