LISTENING
POST

By Guest Columnist
JACKIE KALLEN
There are stars and then
there are superstars. Frankie
Valli, who was at Pine Knob
recently with his group, the
Four Seasons, is a whole lot
more. He's a super human
being.
My husband, Mike, and I
had Valli over for a barbecue
while he was in town, and
since we had alread seen his
show the night before, we
had planned to simply drop
him off at the theater in time
for his show that night. But
we ended up seeing the whole
show again and loving it as
much as we did the first
time.
It all happened because
two of my other guests at
the barbecue, Milt and Jewel
Weiss, mentioned to Valli
that his record, "Can't Take
My Eyes Off You" was re-
sponsible for getting them
together half a dozen year
ago. He was very flattered
and insisted that we all come
out to Pine Knob so that he
could do the number just for
them.
We sat in the front row,
and sure enough, he came
right over and sang "their"
song to them. It was a
touching moment for the
Weisses and one that they
won't forget. But that's the
kind of guy Frankie Valli is.
He also promised to send
them an autographed copy of
the sheet music for them to
frame.
Before he left town, he ex-
pressed a strong desire to
play at the Roostertail again.
He played there years ago
and says it's one of the
finest clubs he has ever
worked at. With their new
policy of entertainment, its
a good possibility that
Frankie Valli and the Four
Season will be appearing
there sometime before the
summer is over.
Planning a high school re-
union is no easy ,task. Es-
pecially when it's the Mum-
ford School class of 1964.
The reunion is being held at
Cobo Hall Aug. 10. It's go-
ing to be a party to end all
parties. If you're a member
of that class and haven't sent
in your money yet, you don't
know what you're going to be
missing.
The whole theme of the
affair is "American Graffiti,"
and there will be posters
and blow-ups of nostalgic
events and people. The en-
tertainment is being provid-
ed by two groups, the Soul
Improvisers and Rock and
the Sharks. Rock's group is
like Sha Na Na. They come
out dressed in early '60s and
'50s attire and do all the old
songs that were popular when
we. used to cut classes and
hang out at Fredson's. Also
on hand to add to the nostal-
gic mood will be Dave Schaef-
er, who's now a disc jockey
on WCAR and was a big
favorite back then, and
"Frantic Ernie" Durham who
was on WJLB for 13 years.

tending, call Ken Berton at
626-6337.
Look for the Leland House
to turn into the happening
spot downtown. With Dirty
Helen's in the basement,
Yamato's Japanese Restaur-
ant, two smaller lounges, ca-
baret theater coming up and
a health room—the hotel is
planning a big promotional
drive. It's a great idea to
go down for dinner on Fri-
day night, finish off the eve-
ning at Ditry Helen's get up
on Saturday and lie at the
pool after breakfast or go
shopping downtown and then
live it up on Saturday night.
There are many good rest-
aurants and clubs within
walking distance of the hotel,
and downtown Detroit is defi-
nitely on the way UP again.
Biggest success story on
the local radio scene has got
to be WDEE. Located at 1500
on the AM dial, it's now
one of the most popular sta-
tions in the area. They play
what they call "modern
country" music, and it's ac-
tually more like middle-of-
the-road with a c o u n t r y
flavor. They play things like
John Denver, Gordon Light-
foot, Ray Stevens, Elvis,
Olivia Newton, John and
Merle Haggard.
People who never thought
they liked country music are
now regular Big D listeners.
It's partly due to their super
staff of on-the-air personali-
ties. Deano Day, their morn-
ing man, is way up there in
the ratings, and Tom Dean's
"Femme Forum" is one of
the most popular features on
any station.
The big hangout for the
West Bloomfield crowd dur-
ing the day is definitely Lang-
don's Beach on Upper
Straights Lake. The Beach
is located on Pontiac Trail
just west of Orchard Lake
Rd., and on any afternoon,
you're guaranteed to run
into someone you know.
It's a clean, private beach
with a small refreshment
stand and an admission price
of $1.75 per adult. Kids get
in free. There's a grassy pic-
nic area and a small marina.
It's a nice, close spot to take
the kids on a hot day when
they complain that they
have nothing to do!"

L'Auberge cuisine
will light up your
evening.

Just as eating is not the sole reason for dining
out—expertly prepared food is not the sole
element of a great restaurant. Thus, other
things...service, an unhurried pace, fine wines,
and atmosphere...are provided for L'Auberge
patrons as a matter of course.

And yes, we give you drama too, as evidenced
by the flaming entrance of Steak Diane, one
of the many dishes our captain can prepare
at your table.

Come to L'Auberge ...and discover a great
restaurant.
