Expose Nefarious 'Liberty Lobby' Broadcasts
(Continued from Page 1)
of each "This Is Liberty Lob-
by" broadcast, Goldwater
questioned whether the man-
agements and licensees of the
program's radio outlets are
ignorant of its contents or
"uncaring about their role in
helping to peddle bigotry."
"This Is Liberty Lobby"
began in March of last year
with only four stations, ac-
cording to Goldwater. By
September, the program had
more than 62 outlets, and
`lake the 100 station mark a
-month later.
Goldwater said Carto found-
ed Liberty Lobby as a money
raiser and front for his
"seamier operations," includ-
ing Liberty and Property, a
clearinghouse for keeping in-
formed on anti-Semitic activi-
ties; "Western Destiny," a
magazine with racist, Nazi-
type articles, and Noontide
Press, publisher of anti-Sem-
itic, racist and pro-Nazi
books, including "Imperium"
by the late Nazi apologist,
Francis P. Yockey. The Yoc-
key book contains a dedica-
tion to Adolph Hitler and a
laudatory 35-page introduc-
tion by Carto.
Goldwater went on to say
that Carto, now 47 years old,
began to work full time as a
"professional bigot and or-
ganizer" in 1954 when he be-
came executive secretary of
Liberty and Property. His 20-
year career includes serving
as a director of Congress of
Freedom, a right-wing, ra-
cist organization, and as an
organizer for the John Birch
Society. In 1966, he took over
the once venerable American
Mercury magazine and used
its name for "a quarterly de-
voted largely to anti-Jewish
hate" and issued in tandem
with the semi - monthly
"Washington Observer News-
letter, similarly laden with
unvarnished anti-Semitism."
Carto was also identified as
having run the Youth for Wal-
lace movement, renamed the
National You Alliance,
which is dedicated to the
Yockey philosophy that the
future greatness of the West
must be hinged on "the Ger-
man revolution of 1933 (the
Third Reich)." The ADL
fact-finding chairman noted
that Nazi emblems were dis-
played and Hitler's "Horst
Wessel" song was sung by
guests at an NYA organiza-
tional party in honor of Carto.
Also labeling Carto as a
"racist," Goldwater quoted
him as once having lamented
that "only a few Americans
are concerned . about the in-
evitable niggerfication of
America."
According to Goldwater,
Liberty Lobby was set up as
a "conservative" cover and
source of revenue for Carto's
anti-Semitic activities. He
pointed out, however, that
William F. Buckley Jr.'s Na-
tional Review has labeled the
group as being "pseudo-con-
servative" and that in 1967,
in an unsuccessful s u i t
brought by Liberty Lobby
against the late columnist
Drew Pearson, Warren E.
Burger, then a U. S. Court
of Appeals judge and now
chief justice of the United
States, said the organization's
activities reveal "cvertones
of anti-Semitism and ra-
cism." Part of the materials
examined by Judge Burger
was a Carto quote declaring
that "Hitler's defeat was the
defeat of Europe. And Amer-
ica . . . The blame must be
laid at the door of the inter-
national Jews."
Liberty Lobby is not the
sole Carto front, according to
ADL, which identifies others
as Americans for National
Security, Government Educa-
tional Foundation, Save Our
Schools, the United Congress-
ional Appeal and the afore-
mentioned Tax Action.
"That the 'respectable' ve-
neer of Liberty Lobby has
worn pretty thin is not sur-
prising," Peirez said, noting
its letterhead has contained
"such well-known anti-Sem-
ites as Richard Cotten, Ted
Touchstone, Kenneth Goff,
W. Henry MacFarIand, Jo-
seph P. Kamp, Tyler Kent
and Allen Zoll."
"This is how Liberty Lob-
by," Peirez concluded, "can
fool the public — and radio
management and licensees—
into thinking it is a respect-
able news source only as long
as the organization's anti-
Semitic character remains
hidden."
