The Mufti's Crimes and the Democracies' Callousness

(Concluded from Page 48)
that he had played a central
role in the program for the
extermination of Europe's
Jews.
"For these reasons Swit-
zerland refused him sanc-
tuary at the war's end, and
he was picked up by French
troops. Despite his war rec-
ord, British Foreign Minister
Ernest Bevin declined to ask
for his extradition, refused
to brand him a war criminal,
and left him to house arrest
by the French. When he left
Paris a year later, the house
arrest had been so relaxed
that it was unnecessary for
him to 'escape.'
"It is commonly assumed
that British governments
have played this game of
cops and robbers with the
Mufti in an effort to retain
the friendship of the Arabs.
The United States seems to

victorious in Palestine, he
will surely become the head
of the new Arab state, and
he will oppose all Western
influence. He is even con-
templating turning the Arab
Higher Committee into a

himself as leader.
"Recently, a prominent
Arab business man recalled
some advice he had given
the British colonial secretary
in 1939.
" 'I suggested,' he told me,
`that if Britain wanted to
solve all of its problems in
the Arab world, it needed
only to get the Mufti back
to Palestine at once. He
would have been bumped off
within two days after getting
there. Today,' my informant

63 Sons of War Dead Honored
at Mass Bar Mitzva Ceremony

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
group of 63 boys who lost
their fathers in Israeli wars
took part in a mass Bar
Mitzva ceremony at the
Habad village near here.
Some 5,000 guests, headed
by Chief of Staff Gen, Mor-
dechai Gur, joined in the
celebration, which also was
attended by all the students
who were injured at the re-
cent Ma'alot incident.
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin, who came specially
to greet the Bar Mitzva
boys, presented each with a
medallion. He said that their
fathers gave their lives for
one goal, the establishment
of a peaceful future for Is-
rael.
The premier said to the
boys, "You are part of the
new history of Israel. You
will also have to- learn the
art of war but it is my true
wish that you never make
use of it."

He told the audience that
while in the United States as
ambassador, he met with
the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Men-
ahem Schneerson, who told
him that, according to Jew-
ish tradition, the nation of
Israel was chosen and is a
nation that lives alone.

It is for that reason, said
Rabin, that Israel fights her

Mufti Burial

People Still Come First At

AMMAN—Israeli authori-
ties have refused to allow
the body of the former Grand
Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin
el-Husseini, to be buried in

Jordanian officials said a

the Islamic Council of Jeru-
salem to the Israelis, who
rejected it.

Music Dedicated
to Fallen Premieres

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Israel Philharmonic Orches-
tra performed the world
-premiere of a work by a
Chilean immigrant dedicated
to the fallen in the Yom .
Kippur War.
The work, performed un-
der the baton of Zubin Menta,
the orchestra's musical ad-
viser, was composed last No-
vember by Leon Schidlow-
sky, who, since immigraling
from Chile in 1969, has be-
come one of Israel's fore-
most composers.
In a preface to his work,
Schidlowsky, professor of
composition at the Rubin
Academy of Music at Tel
Aviv University, quoted
David's lament for Saul and
Jonathan: "The beauty of
Israel is slain upon the high
places. How are the mighty
fallen."

The war composition,
which consists of one move-
ment, expresses contrasts of
mood coupling battle sounds
with the traditional Kol Nidre
cut off by an air raid siren.
