To let them operate was
the least Lebanon could

Improper Mezuzot Discovered During Drive
Editor, The Jewish News:
As part of the five-fold
"mitzva campaign" launched
recently, we of the Midwest
Lubavitch organization have
been taking down mezuzos by
the hundreds from the doors
of people's homes i n the
greater Detroit area, in or-
der to examine them for
wear and tear.
We were not at all pre-
pared for what we found. We
had expected to find a fair
number of hand-written,
parchment mezuzos that had
once been kosher, but whose
lettering had fa d e d or
cracked due to age and were
therefore possul or unfit. In-
stead, what has met our hor-
rified eyes over the past two
weeks is a flood of mezuzos
that never were kosher in
the first place and which
therefore constituted a grave
deception of the unwary
homeowner who purchased
them in good faith. Among
our "prize specimens" (a few
of which are now on display
in the lobby of the Lubavit-
cher Center in Oak Park)
are:
Hundreds of mezuzos
which, though handwritten
on parchment, have many un-
intelligible or distorted let-

ters, cracks or breaks in the
letters throughout, letters or
even words missing—all of
which render them absolute-
ly unfit according to Jewish
law;

A "mezuza" containing the
correct Torah portions — but
written by a layman in ordi-
nary script with a ballpoint
pen on paper!
A "mezuza" containing the

We call on the Jewish com-
munity to take immediate
steps to supervise the hala-
khic fitness of all religious
articles such as tefillin or
mezuzos.
We further issue a warn-
ing to all members of the
community—DO NOT TAKE

Haber Impressed
With Leadership
of Jewish Agency
Editor, The Jewish News:
I wish I had time to give
you a few hundred words
about my impression of Is-
rael after two full weeks..
This is the first meeting
of the Jewish Agency As-
sembly which I have ever
attended. Frankly, I was
immensely impressed with
the leadership which the
Americans have given to the
reconstituted agency This is
particularly true for Max
Fisher, whose presence is
definitely felt and for whom
there is an immense amount
of respect. He carries great
influence.
Since I have known him
for a couple of decades, it
was a special pleasure to
watch him "operate." He is
especially forceful in con-
nection with the problem of
the universities which has
taken me to Israel for the
fourth time this year.
With respect to the general
political atmosphere, it is
important to observe that one
feels more confident about
the outlook when there than
when here.
One forgets instantly about
the survival syndrome. This
is almost inevitable, for
whether dealing with higher
education, or housing, or im-
migration, or scientific re-
search, one is instantly
caught up in plans which in-
volve a span of time at least
10 years or perhaps 25.
Incidentally, Nixon made
a tremendous impression on
the country. I was there at
the time. His remarks about
Golda were perceptive, beau-
tifully stated, and well re-
c e i v e d. She, incidentally,
gave a superb talk at an
afternoon session of the
Agency assembly — one of
her best.
