ship, to be supervised by the
United Jewish Charities.
The scholarships will be
awarded to deserving Ameri-
can students to attend three
of Israel's high schools.

thropic organizations, such

served on the board of direc-
tors, and the Hundred Club
and United Jewish Charities.
Born in New York but
reared in Highland Park, he
has been a Detroit resident
all of his adult life. He mar-
ried a n a t i v e Detroiter,
Sylvia. Bronstein. With two of
his brothers, he is the owner
of the Hotel Pontchartrain
and motels around the city
and is serving on the board
of directors of the Detroit
Convention Bureau and the
Central Business District As-
sociation.
At one time, Gershenson
was a commissioner of De-
troit Street Railways (DSR)
and was appointed by Gov.
Swainson to the advisory
board of the Michigan State
Fair Commission. He also
served on the citizens advis-
ory committee of the Detroit-
Wayne County Port Commis-
sion. Recently, he was ap-
pointed to the board of di-
rectors of Great Scott Super-
markets.
Gershenson started his ca-
reer with his father and
brothers in Ned's Auto Sup-
ply Stores, eventually the
world's largest outlet for

Tisha b'Av Rites at Adat Shalom

Adat Shalom Synagogue
will usher in Tisha b'Av with
a candlelight service 9:30
p.m. July 27 at the syna-
gogue.
Originally, Tisha b'Av was
a day of mourning for the
destruction of the First and
Second Temples in Jerusa-
lem. Today, Tisha b'Av has
taken on the added signifi-
cance of being a day of
mourning for the Six Million
and for affirming unity with
Soviet Jews.
The reading of the Book of
Lamentations, in Hebrew,
will be by Cantor Larry Vie-
der, Rabbi Seymour Rosen-
loom, Sol Rose, Asher Til-
chin, Andrew Dunsky, Mark
Loomus, Fred Pfeffer, Mich-
ael Neuvirth, Ricky Schos-
tak, Michael Schwartz, Mark
Vieder and Jeffrey Weingar-

construction and develop-
ment of residential and com-
mercial properties.
In the past 20 years, with
his four sons, Joel, Dennis,
Richard and Bruce, and his
brother, Aaron, he has pio-
neered the development of
enclosed-mall shopping cen-
ters, among them Pontiac
Mall and the Tel-Twelve
Shopping Center. The Gersh-
ensons also are one of the
largest independent develop-
ers for the S. S. Kresge Co.
and its K-mart stores.
Gershenson has been a
commercial pilot since 1942
and is an "Admiral" in the
Flag Ship Fleet of American
Airlines since 1940. He owned
and operated the Detroit
Aviation Co. and Flight
School in Fraser.
During World War II, he
headed the Tire Return and
Conservation Program for the
city of Detroit.
He is a member of Temple
Beth El, Fr anklin Hills
Country Club and the Stand-
ard Club.
