CONSIDER

Bible Commentary,
800 Years Old
Stiidied at Yeshiva

NEW YORK — An unpub-
lished 800-year-old Bible
commentary by a contem-
porary of the venerated
Rashi (1040-1105) has been
examined in a doctoral study
at Yeshiva University. -
The study was completed
by Rabbi Moshe Weiss of
Brooklyn and marks the first
critical edition of Sefer Rus-
hino, composed by a little-
known 12th Century scholar,
Rabbi Samuel of Russia.
Despite the name, Rabbi
Weiss maintains that the
author was Italian rather
than Russian, posSibly from
the town of Rossano in the
region of Calabria in southern
Italy. Rabbi Weiss bases his
opinion on Rabbi Samuel's
tendency to translate words
and phrases into Italian and
Greek.
In his study, Rabbi Weiss
used the oldest complete
copy of the Rushino manu-
script, which is housed in
the Vatican Library.
In addition to a discussion
of Rabbi Samuel's method
and style, Rabbi Weiss has
transcribed the text of
Genesis based on the Vatican
copy of the manuscript, com-
pares the various versions of
the Rushino manuscript, and
gives notes and comments on
the text.
