Kelley sent a tele- gram to President Nixon in Moscow asking his interven- tion for Soviet Jewry and another to Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad concerning the trial of two Jews in Syria. In the cable to Mr. Nixon, Kelley said the "arrest of Jews by Soviet authorities occasioned by your visit subverts our nation's conten- tion to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Hu- man Rights . I urge that you make every effort to se- cure release by Soviet author- ities of political prisoners, an end to their harassment, and a guarantee of emigration if a genuine detente is to be achieved." His telegram to Assad in Damascus stated: "In order to bring about better relations between our countries I urge that Yussef Shaluh and Azur Zalta be given an open public trial in accordance with interna- tionally accepted standards of due process. To insure that a fair trial is held, I urge you to allow representa- tives of the foreign press to observe the proceedings." Lewis S. Grossman, presi- dent of Detroit's Jewish Com- munity Council, sent a plea to the Syrian government to pro- vide an open trial and to in- sure due process of law for the two men. These charges stemming from their at- tempts to help co-religionists emigrate to Israel. Officials of the American Jewish Committee have learned that the trial of Yussef Shaluh and Azur Zalta began in secret on June 19. The two men were- ar- rested in March and charged with the murder and rape of four young Jewish women who were attempting to es- cape official persecution of Syrian• Jewry. The Committee of Concern, a nonsectarian American group headed by General Lucius D. Clay, investigated the charges and uncovered strong evidence that the allegations against the men are unwarranted and part of a campaign to harass Syria's Jewish minority.
