Columbus' jewishness Yet to Be Confirmed

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Christopher Columbus is
thought by many scholars to
have been of Marrano extrac-
tion. According to Encyclo-
pedia Judaica, he was mys-
terious when speaking of his
origin, apparently having

Though a document was
recently discovered which
makes it almost certain that
Columbus belonged to a Mar-

gin, its authenticity has still
to be proved; until it is, the
hypothesis that he was des-
cended from a Jewish or
formerly Jewish family can-
not be confirmed but neither
can it be denied.

Columbus began his ac-
count of his voyage with a
reference to the expulsion of
the Jews from Spain. In one
document he referred to the
Second Temple by the He-
braic term "Second House".
He set the year of its destruc-
tion as 68, in accordance with
Jewish tradition. He seems to
have deliberately postponed
the day of sailing until Aug.
3, though all was ready on
the previous day, but that

which he wished to conceal.
He boasted about his connec-
tion with King David and
had a penchant for Jewish
and Marrano society.
If he was really born in
Genoa, Italy, it may be as-
sumed that his parents were
Jewish or ex-Jewish refugees
from Spain. His strange sig-
nature, which he charged his
son always to use, is suscept-
ible to a Hebraic interpreta-
tion.
