Telegram to Nixon in Russia Hits Pelayin-Natchez
Harassment of Soviet Jews
Rites SolemY/iZed

The Flint Jewish Commun-
ity Council sent a telegram
to President Nixon, asking
him to protest against Soviet
treatment of its Jewish citi-
zens in Russia.
The telegram read in part:
"We call upon you to speak
out against the brutal arrests
of Soviet Jews . . . and to
seek the immediate freedom
of these individuals whose
only •crime is having been re-
fused permisson to emigrate
to Israel over the past years.
"Detente between countries

moral issues cannot be swept
aside to open a preliminary
path to the possibility of such
detente.

The telegram was signed
by Michael A. Pelavin, pres-
ident of the Flint JCC; Hy
Klein, chairman of the Flint
Jewish community relations
committee: and by Richard
Krieger, executive director
of the Flint JCC.
Another telegram, signed
by the above and in support
of Syrian Jews was sent to
the Syrian ambassador to the
UN, UN Secretary-General
Kurt Waldheim and to Sec-
retary of State Henry A.
Kissinger.
That 'telegram stated in
part:
"The trial of Yussef Shaluh
and Azur Zalta, two Syrian
Jews, which resumed in Da-
mascus on June 19, is being
held in violation of interna-
tional concerns for jurispru-
dence.
"This show trial, while
being held in the state secur-
ity court, has not made pub-
lic the precise charges being
leveled against these two
Jews," the letter stated.
"We are opposed to the
possibility of a trumped-up
charge of smuggling persons
to an enemy country, for if
desperate Jews seek to leave
Syria illegally, it is only be-
cause they are denied legal
avenues of escape," the•tele-
gram' said.
"Syria's refusal to allow
Jews to emigrate is a viola-
tion of the UN's 'Universal
Declaration of Human Rights.
We call upon you to act in
implementing a release for
all Jews unjustly imprisoned
by Syrian authorities . . . and
permit them to emigrate to
countries where they can
live in freedom."

Spirit of Sabbath

By ABRAHAM J. HESCHEL
In "Man's Quest for God"
Prayer takes the mind out
of the narrowness of selfin-
terest, and enables us to see
the world in the mirror of
the holy.
The focus of prayer is not
the self. Prayer comes to
pass in a complete turning of
the heart toward God, toward
His goodness and power. It
is the momentary disregard
of our personal concerns, the
absence of self-centered
thoughts, which constitute
the art of prayer. Feeling be-
comes prayer in the moment
in which we forget ourselves
and become aware of God...
Prayer is an invitation to
God to intervene in our lives,
tc let His will prevail in our
affairs; it is the opening of
a window to Him in our will,
an effort to make Him the
Lord of our soul . .
In crisis, in moments of
despair, a word of prayer is
like a strap we take hold of
when tottering in a rushing
street car which seems to be
turning over.
