Livonia Mayor Edwar d McNamara presented Koois- tra with a key to the city, making him an honorary citizen. Speaking to the congrega- tion, Kooistra told how his wife began lighting candles on the Jewish Sabbath. The Kooistras made their first trip to Israel in 1958 at the invitation and expense of an Israeli woman who was rescued by the couple. At her Haifa home, the woman told them how her mother, who was killed in a concentration c a m p, had prayed every Friday night as she lit the Shabat candles. Giving candles to Mrs. Kooistra, she asked her to do likewise. Since 1958 Mrs. Kooistra has lighted candles every Shabat. For three years, Kooistra hid the eight Jews from his neighbors and children. Neighbors had suspected them of dealing in the black market since Mrs. Kooistra was always buying extra food and clothing. "My father hid the Jews in his workroom which was always locked," said the Kooistras' daughter Anneke. "We were told if we ever went near there, we would be severely punished. We were so afraid that we stayed away," she said. Translating for her father, Anneke, now Mrs. Donald Burke, said "when my par- ents first touched the soil of Israel and saw the Israeli girls singing for them, they cried." Kooistra went to the Wail- ing Wall with one of those he had harbored and re- called, "At the Wall, I realized that we all pray to the same God." He added he has since become friends with the Jews who once lived in his workroom cupboards. Anneke, a former member of the Livonia congregation, brought her parents' deed to its attention. In May, the Kooistras were honored by the Flint Jewish community. Recipients of the Yad Vashem Award, the Koois- tras were brought to the at- tention of the memorial authorities by the Israeli woman. Following a year's investigation in which wit- nesses were sought and letters written to verify their actions, the Kooistra name was inscribed in a special book at the memorial. There is a tree planted in their honor along the Street of the Righteous Gentiles, and a square in Haifa is named for them. MR. and MRS.
