ROME (JTA)—Pope Paul VI last weekend launched an appeal in favor of the Pales- tinians which he described as left "in a state of abandon and suffering which has lasted too long." Addressing the College of Cardinals, the Pope said the Church "encourages the search for a just and digni- fied means to end the for- midable and tragic difficul- ties linked to the fate of the Palestinian people." Turning to Jerusalem, the pontiff called on three major monotheistic religions to end their "continual claims" on the ancient city, which he said, should be "a symbol of peace." Referring to Pr esident Nixon's mission to Israel and N DARIUS MILHAUD His mother, Sophie Allatini, a native of Marseilles, came from a distinguished family of Sephardic' Jews in Italy. Mr. Milhaud enjoyed suc- cess in the U.S.; where he was the first conductor of the Chicago Symphony Or- chestra. Among the institu- tions in the U.S. that honored him was Brandeis Univer- sity. Mr. Milhaud was a mem- ber of "The Six," an arbi- trary name given to six French composers whom he said "all knew each other and were .good friends, and because we appeared on the same programs without any regard to our different tem- peraments and styles." Mr. Milhaud often referred to himself as "a Frenchman from Provence and by reli- gion a Jew." He was said to have won as much acclaim for his collaboration with Claudel, a Catholic, as he did for his musical settings of Jewish poetry, drama and liturgy. In 1940, Mr. Milhaud fled France from the Germans who occupied the country and came to the U.S. A teaching position at Mills College was to provide his permanent link to America. Sidney A.
