The response of the Jewish Family Service in Philadel- phia to the national phenom- enon of a steadily growing number of Jewish single par- ents, most of them women, has been the development since 1969 of 13 single mothers' treatment groups in the agency's four district offices. The decision to emphasize ,:tment through the, group process, rather than by individual counseling, has emerged from evidence at the agency that such treat- ment has had substantial success in helping such women to cope with the myriad problems of their new status.
