3 Parties Block
Israel Budget

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Op-
position parties in the Knes-
set finance committee are
blocking approval of a state
budget—apparently with the
objective of embarrassing
the government.
A three-month interim bud-
get approved by the Knesset
expires Sunday and the gov-
ernment faces the situation of
having to operate without a
budget after that date.
The opposition parties —
Likud, National Religious
Party and the Aguda bloc—
occupy 11 of the 22 seats on
the finance committee and
have voted en bloc against
the budgets for individual
ministries.
State's Attorney Meir Sham-
gar has ruled that if the
vote in committee is tied,
the budget is regarded as
approved and may be sent
to the Knesset, where the
government coalition com-
mands a majority, for final
passage.
But the finance committee
has yet to vote on the new
budget as a whole. It is not
certain how the Aguda bloc
will vote this time.
If it goes along with Likud
and the NRP to create
another tie, the opposition
may drag out the proceed-
ings so that the government
begins the month of July
with no approved budget.

1 000 Turn Out for Tay-Sachs Screening Program

,

Tay-Sachs Disease, the baby killer, was the reason that 1,000 per-
sons turned out Sunday to make sure that they are not carriers of the
dread ailment. They came in singles and couples, many with children
and some of the women pregnant, to the United Hebrew Schools build-
ing. One of them was Mrs. Rita Morse (seated, in center photo), shown
being attended by medical technician Sharon Moss. The program is
being undertaken by Sinai Hospital in cooperation with Dr. Lester
Weiss, director of the genetic counseling clinic of Ford Hosptal. Finan-
cial sponsorship was provided by the Jewish Community Foundaton

(United Jewish Charities) with the cooperation of the March of Dimes.
Volunteers from the Jewish Welfare Federation junior division, Bnai
Brith Women and Bnai Brith Girls are active in the program. Some 48
doctors, nurses and lab technicians donated their time to participate in
the screening, which will be repeated at 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, at the
UHS building. Married couples of child-bearing age, especially of Eastern
and Central European Jewish extraction, are urged to undergo the
simple screening.

Jewish Revival
Movement to Have
Branch in Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
"Revolutionary Jewish Re-
vival Movement in America"
has decided to set up a
branch in Israel and a school
in Jerusalem where every
Jew, irrespective of educa-
tional level or age, "would
be able to absorb true Jew-
ish understanding, where
every Jew would be able to
hear words that would bring
him nearer to the Jewish
values and true belief."
This was announced by the
leader of the movement,
Esther Jungreis at a press
conference at Sokolow House.
Mrs. Jungreis was invited
to Israeli army camps, bases
and hospitals where she
talked and sang with soldiers
in the name of the "Jewish
soul." She said she found an
enormous yearning for re-
ligion without politics, a tre-
mendous thirst for Jewish
values, for a return to God,
for a belief, among the
soldiers she met.
Mrs. Jungreis, the wife of
a rabbi, has been described
as "The Jewish Billy Gra-
ham."
