Cantor-Composer Sholom Secunda, 79; Wrote Popular and Litutgical Music NEW YORK —Sholom Se- cunda, a cantor, conductor and composer of "Bei Mir Bist du Schoen," a song which he sold for $30 but which earned millions for other people, died June 13 at age 79. Born in Alexandria, Rus- sia, Mr. Secunda came to the U.S. at age 8, bringing with him a reputation as a vocal prodigy and cantor. He wrote some 60 operettas and more 1,000 songs. He sold the Schoen" in 1933 and 28 years later had the copyright re- turned. The song earned mil- lions. for Sammy Cahn, who wrote the English lyrics, and for the Andrews Sisters, who recorded-it. Mr. Secunda, a musical di- rector at the Concord Hotel in the Catskills for many years, conducted a 65-piece symphony orchestra in a series of Thursday concerts which featured many Metro- politan Opera stars. Since his early childhood, he conducted orchestras in vaudeville, grand opera and symphonies in major cities throughout the country. As a music critic for The Jewish Daily Forward, he won commendation from his colleagues for the perception of his articles, the New York Times reported. He also lec- tured on American and Jew- ish music and wrote many articles on 'music for news- papers and magazines. - Mr. Secunda once said "One of the greatest satisfac- tions I get out of my work is the opportunity to show that Jewish music is not neces- sarily a wail. It can be as merry and happy as the most cheerful music of any other race or nation." Among his works are "Clarinet Quintet," based on hasidic modes; "String Quar- tet in C minor," "Yom Ha- kibutz," a symphonic work; "If Not. Higher" and "Yiz- kor," two oratorios; and a musical "Hard to Be a Jew," which recently completed its run. A fellow of the Interna- tional Institute of Arts and Letters, Mr. Secunda re- ceived awards from many national and international in- stitutions. He was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and. Pub- lishers and had been presi- dent of the Society of Jewish Composers since 1932.
