OF 10 ML, 354-9660 TEL AVIV — The Sinai Peninsula never was an in- tegral part of Egyptian ter- ritory, according to an Is- raeli scholar, Azariah Allon. Allon, who has done re- search into the area, said the Sinai was part of the Turkish Empire prior to 1906. In that year, bowing to the British, who ruled Egypt, the Turks agreed to give the Egyptians control over the desert. Formal title remained with the Turks until 1927, when they agreed to transfer the Sinai to Egypt. Even in 1967, when Israel captured the Sinai, writes Anon, there still were no Egyptian inhabitants, other than a few Bedouin nomads who were not even accorded Egyptian citizenship. The author concludes that the Egyptians' insistence on retention of the Sinai as "sa- cred" Egyptian territory is simply a joke. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 157 Gaza, Sinai Teachers Finish Course at Negev BEERSHEBA—A group of 157 high-school teachers from the Gaza Strip and Sinai who have completed a four-month teaching course at Ben-Gur- ion University of the Negev, received special certificates at a ceremony at the Uni- versity Sunday. The teachers, among them 10 women, traveled in special buses to the university once a week. for four months to attend lectures by a team of nine faculty members on the teaching o f mathematics, English and biology and spe- cial lectures in psychology. All of the participants have degrees from universities in Egypt, Syria and Iraq, al- though not all of them have taken teachers training courses. This is the second year that the course has been held. It was organized jointly by the military government . of Gaza. and . Sinai . and . the teachers training department of Ben-Gurion. University' of the Negev. Last year, 150 teachers attended. One major difficulty which had to be solved during the course was that none of the university staff spoke Arabic, while many of the teachers did not have sufficient grasp of English or Hebrew. The problem was overcome by using a translator who did almost a running translation of the lecture into Arabic. Another problem was to per- suade the "pupils" that doing homework would not degrade their status as high school teachers. Ex-Deportees Appeal for Beate Klarsfeld PARIS (JTA) — A newly formed "Action Committee for Beate Klarsfeld," led by LICA president Jean Pierre- Bloch, has published an ap- peal in "Le Monde" in sup- port of the Nazi hunter due to stand trial in West Ger- many on June 25. The 'Eyes' Have It NEW YORK — Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had an ongoing secret diplomatic relation until Newsweek blew his cover. Once a week the West Ger- man Embassy in Washington rushed a bulky envelope, marked "Eyes Only" to Kissinger, and when it is late, he "impatiently in quir es about it." The envelope's contents have been revealed -- it con- tains a list of German soccer scores. According to his aides, Kissinger is a- secret fan, but as a diplomat, favors no particular team.
