Mrs. Weiner, a native of

Detroit area 51. years. She
held a 1,000-hour pin for her
service to the Cancer Foun-
dation and also was a mem-
ber of Temple Israel Sister-
hood.

Philip Kaplan, 78
of Electric Supply
Neil Wesson, whose color-
ful life included heroism in
the European Theater during
World War II, authorship of
a book on history and union
organizing in Detroit's auto
plants in the 1930s, died Sun-
day at age 68.
Mr. Wesson (Weisenfeld),
was a native Detroiter whose
first job was as a newspaper
peddler at age 8. He was
taught to read at an early
age and was proud to say
later in life that he was self-
taught in world history. His
book, "Man in Ferment,"
was published by Philosophi-
cal Library in 1969.
In 1934, as an automotive
welder, he took part in the
CIO organizing drive in the
Detroit factories, but he left
in 1936 to join the Lincoln
Brigade during the Spanish
Civil War. After two years
in the fight against fascism,
and having been wounded
several times, he returned to
the U. S., weighing 96
pounds.
At age 36, already mar-
ried, Mr. Wesson enlisted in
the army, joining the 40th
Combat Engineers as a re-
connaissance scout in the Eu-
ropean Theater. He frequent-
ly went behind enemy lines,
moving with the action to
Africa, Sicily, Italy, France
and Germany. For his serv-
ice, he received the Legion
of Merit-one of five award-
ed to Jewish men in Michi-
gan - and was cited for his
knowledge of military tactics.
After the war, he earned a
bachelors degree from
Wayne State University, but
disliking sedentary life went
back to work in the factory,
where he stayed until 1961.
He was a member of UAW
Local 174, the Disabled
American Veterans, Jewish
Folk Chorus and the Great
Books Society.

Dr. Max Silverman, phy-
sician with the city of Dear-
born since 1948, died June 9
at age 80.
Born in Hamilton, Ont., Dr.
Silverman, 2240 W. Grand
Blvd., served in the U.S.
Navy from 1917 to 1948, when
he retired with the rank of
captain. He was graduated
from Tufts University's medi-
cal school in Boston. He was
a member of the Wayne
County and American Medi-
cal -associations, and a mem-
ber of Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
He recently was honored by
the city of Dearborn for 25
years of service to the com-
munity.
He leaves two sisters, Mrs.
Jack (Leah) Shapiro and
Mrs. Max (Lillian) Braun-
stein.
We mutually pledge to

tunes, and our sacred honor.

Isidor Mellen, 89,
Ex-Society Head
Isidor Mellen, past presi-
dent of Korostishiver Society
of Detroit, died Wednesday
at age 89.
Born in Russia, Mr. Mellen
lived 66 years in Detroit. He
was a mechanic for the Chry-
Corp. and worked for the
Essex Wire Co. prior to his
retirement in 1952. A mem-
ber of the Hebrew Benevo-
lent Society, Mr. Mellen re-
sided at Borman Hall.
He is survived by a son,
Dr. Hyman S.; two sisters,
Mrs. Pearl Chafetz and Mrs.
Ida Feinstein; and three
grandchildren.
