Rabbis Seek Aid to Falashas, Suffering Hardships in Ethiopia

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Seaboard Region of the.
United Synagogue of America
has announced the adoption
of resolutions asking for as-
sistance to the 26,000 Ethio-
pian Jews, often called
Falashas, continued support
of the Jackson Amendment
tying U.S. trade benefits to
the Soviet Union to its emi-
gration practices, and ask-
ing Washington area Jewish
congregations to become in-
volved in the interreligious
action program known as
PROJECT, an acronym for
estant, Jewish, Catholic.

meeting Sunday reported that
the Ethiopian Jews, whose
number has fallen from about
250,000 at the turn of the
century, face overwhelming
hardships.
Bert Silver of Washington,
chairman of the region's
social action committee, said
that the decline in numbers
was due to extreme poverty,
landlessness, ill health and
the concerted e f f or t s of
Christian missionaries.
The region called upon the
Joint Distribution Committee,

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

the Organization for Rehabil-
itation and Training (ORT)
and the Jewish Agency to
take the steps to enable
those who wish to emigrate
to Israel and to aid those
remaining to rebuild a stable
community.
The regional board also
called on synagogues not to
permit the use of oshek, "the
product of oppression," in
their buildings and to urge
kosher caterers to buy only
United Farm Worker lettuce
and grapes and on rabbis to

speak out on the issue. The
board said many rabbinical
bodies throughout the U. S.
have proclaimed non-UFW
lettuce and grapes to be
"oshek."
