Kaufman has been elected president of the Greater Detroit-Southeastern Michigan chapter of Muscu- lar Dystrophy Associations of America, Inc. Mrs. Kaufman, wife of Probate Court Presid- ing Judge Ira G. Kaufman, formerly served the chapter as vice president. Active for 17 years as a dystrophy vol- unteer, Mrs. Kaufman was instrumental in approaching the Holden Fund for sponsor- ship of the annual Muscular Dystrophy Summer Camp and for the Holden Fund's gift of a specially designed van to transport dystrophy patients in wheelchairs. Mrs. Kaufman also initiated, and continues to arrange, the an- nual Christmas party for dy- strophic youngsters. * 50,000 Young Adults Due to Participate in Reform Programs NEW YORK — The Union of American Hebrew Congre- gations announced that a record number of 50,000 Re- form Jewish high school and college youths will partici- pate in educational and self- identification programs both here and in Israel during the 1974-75 congregational year. Reform Jewish laymen and rabbis attending the annual board of trustees meeting of the .UAHC at the House of Living Judaism, were told that these youth activities will assist in preparing these young - Jews as future Jewish leaders. -- Rabbi Stephen A. Schafer, director of the UAHC's youth division, explained that these varied programs are being conducted in Israel, at the UAHC camps, on the college campus and in the synagogue and "are designed to give the young person the neces- sary tools of 'knowledge and community leadership to tackle the problems of Jew- ish life tomorrow." The kit , contains cut-out tickets, badges, booth signs and even ring-masters' moustaches and bow ties. In- structions for setting up a ring toss, penny pitch, bal- loon relay, marble shoot and other games also are in- cluded. Colorful posters are pro- vided to advertise the carni- val to neighborhood friends and relatives. Mrs. Ira G. Kaufman, president of the local MDAA chapter, said "It really doesn't matter whether the child raises $2 or $200 . . . the important thing is doing something for someone else." Proceeds from "Carnivals Against Dystrophy" help to provide medical care, ther- apy, wheelchairs, braces and other services, free of charge, to dystrophy patients throughout southeastern Michigan.
