Synagogue Membership Fees Debate Closed
Debate over synagogue
memberships and ability of
the less affluent to have Bar
Mitzva services in syna-
gogues with which they are
not affiliated brought com-
ments additional to those
published in the Letter Box
last week.
While the debate is now
considered closed, two addi-
tional views merit quotation.
Rabbi Seymour Rosen-
bloom, in a long letter, pre-
- 'sents the attitude of Cong.
Mat Shalom. He states that
"no _ family need feel that
either they or their son is a

second-class member of the
Jewish faith. The option of
belonging to a synagogue is
open to everyone, and con-
gregations will not let legiti-
mate financial considerations
prevent a family from af-
filiating.
"It is true, however, that
many families do in fact
choose second' class citizen-
ship when it comes to the
synagogues either because
they are not interested
enough to get the facts of
synagogue membership re-
quirements, or because they
have decided that synagogue
affiliation, while well within
their financial abilities, is not
worth the expenditure be-
cause it is low on their scale
of priorities."
Robert N. Canvasser, hon-
orary president of Temple
Beth El, agreed that all
synagogues reduce fees for
those who cannot afford the
full rate. He added: -
"The synagogue is sup-
ported only by dues from its
members. The synagogue
gets nothing from any other
source. Therefore, is it

proper that a member who
has supported the synagogue
for many years be asked to
share that moment with
others who have not felt it
their responsibility to sup-
port a synagogue, but, who
wish to take advantage of
the services of the syna-
gogue?
"Yes, we do build great
big beautiful synagogues, but
they are built as they should
be as a house of worship,
a house of study and a house
of assembly. This can only
be accomplished by the sup-
port of every Jew, and every
Jew realizing his responsi-
bility."
Rabbi Jonas Goldberg, for-
mer assistant rabbi of Adat
Shalom, now at Cong.
Beth El in Norwalk,
Conn., voiced agreement with
his colleagues, and added,
"There are a number of con-
gregations who have no 'edi-
fice complex' whose dues
would be considered within'
one's ability. Synagogue
memberships are relatively
high because someone has to
pay for the expenses of run-
ning such institutions. By
the way," he said, "a Jewish
male becomes Bar Mitzva
automatically when he be-
comes 13 years and one day
old, with or without any
ceremony."
