Honors accorded to Nor-
man Allan by Detroit Friends
of Yeshiva University, at the
a n n u a 1 dinner at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek June 6,
marked family continuity in
the honoree's devotion to
traditional Jewish learning.
Guest speaker Dr. Israel
Miller, vice president for
student affairs at Yeshiva
University, joined in honor-
ing Allan and called atten-
tion to his being the grand-
son of one of the builders
of Yeshiva University. In
the early 1900s, his grand-
father, the late Rabbi Rach-
miel Cohen, was among the
major workers for and sup-
porters of the 'Rabbi Isaac
Elhanan Yeshiva which grew
to Yeshiva College and later
to Yeshiva University.
Joseph Jackier, who pre-
sided at the dinner, added' his
expression of appreciation
for Allan's community efforts
and his support of Yeshiva
University and educational
causes.
The annual event was
marked by the participation
of many Yeshiva University
and Isaac Elhanan Yeshiva
graduates. As a first in ex-
pressing appreciation to the
university, Howard Danzig,
who was ordained there, be-
came a master builder by
contributing $18,000. He
joined a large group of De-
troiters who have already en-
rolled as master builders
and some as scientific fel-
lows.
Others who were ordained
at Yeshiva University and
participated in the dinner
were Rabbi James Gordon;
Rabbi Samuel Prero; Rabbi
Jack Goldman, whose wife is
a Stern College (a depart-
ment of Yeshiva University)
graduate and whose daughter
is entering Stern College in
the fall; Rabbi Solomon
Poupko; and Dr. Arnold
Singerman. The latter, now
a pjracticing dentist, calls
himself "Rabbi Doctor."
Other Stern College grad-
uates and Yeshiva U. stu-
dents in the audience testi-
fied to the local interest gen-
erated in the schools whose
objectives were outlined in
Dr. Miller's address.
The role played by Albert
Einstein College of Medicine,
a Yeshiva U. department,
which annua 11 y receives
6,000-7,000 applications for
admission, out of which only
175 can be accepted, was
especially emphasized.

Host Families Sought
for Youth Exchange

More than 2,000 high school
students from Europe, South
America, Japan and the
Philippines will arrive in the
U. S. in August to participate
in the one-year Youth for
Understanding International
Student Exchange Program.
A Youth for Understanding
spokesman said that host
families provide the key to
better international under-
standing. The daily living ex-
perience gives the student an
insight and awareness of the
U. S. that is difficult to
duplicate.
Families interested in
opening their homes to these
young students may write for
applications to: Youth for
Understanding, International
Headquarters, Ann Arbor
48104 (1-769-7800).

We all of us live too much
in a circle. — Benjamin Dis-
raeli.

1 Participants in the pro-
gram, in addition to Allan,
who spoke his gratitude for
the honor accorded him,
were Irwin I. Cohn, who pre-
sented- the plaque to the
honoree, Daniel A. Laven,
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal and
Cantor Nicholas Fenakel.
