The United Hebrew Schools
board of directors, meeting
in special session Wednesday
evening, approved the ap-
pointment of Dr. Jay B. Stern
as superintendent of the UHS,
effective the end of next
January.
Dr. Stern, an instructor of
Hebrew at the University of
Rochester, N.Y., is educa-
tional director of Rochester's
Temple Beth El. His con-
tract with the university pre-
vented his coming before
January.
* Dr. Stern succeeds Dr.
Benjamin Yapko, who leaves
in July. There will be no in-
terim superintendent. Ap-
proval of the appointment
was unanimous.
Dr. Stern has written a
number of books and pub-
lished widely, and was de-
scribed as articulate and
concerned with solving the
problems that beset the UHS.
He said he was classroom-,
rather than administration-,
oriented and stated that the
teachers are the most im-
portant part of a „Hebrew
school system.
