Atashi, who was born in 1940 in Isfiya, one of two Druze villages on Mount Car- mel, served in the Israel De- fense Forces for 21/2 years. When Histadrut inaugur- ated its first program of courses for the training of Arab youth in 1963, Atashi started working among the youth of the Druze commun- ity and soon after was ap- pointed deputy director gen- eral of the Arab and Druze Workers Youth Movement. He attended Haifa Univer- sity, specializing in Arabic studies and political science, and obtained his BA degree in 1969. A year later, Atashi began working in the Arabic depart- ment of Israel television in Jerusalem, while continuing studies for an MA degree at the Hebrew University. In 1970, he was put in charge of Arabic television for the northern area of the Haifa District. At the same time, he held a teaching position in the political science de- partment of Haifa University. The Fairmarks, whose tele- phone has been disconnected; by the KGB, sent the letter to Mimi Goldstein, who has been working on their behalf. She said the Fairmarks have been marked for particular harassment since they re- nounced their Soviet citizen- ship and accepted Israeli citi- zen ship in absentia.
