Mrs. Harris has been an active leader in the women's division for more than a decade. She has been divi- sion campaign chairman for the past two years and coor- dinated the emergency cam- paign which followed the Yom Kippur War last fall. She was one of 24 women chosen nationally to join a special United Jewish Appeal mission immediately after the cease-fire agreement with Egypt. One of the two -women's division representatives on the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion's board of governors, she is also a member of Fed- eration's executive commit- tee. In 1967, Mrs. Harris re- ceived the Sylvia Simon Greenberg award, a Federa- tion honor given annually to Orthodox Rabbis Offer to Arbitrate in Teachers' Dispute With UHS With the controversy be- tween Hebrew teachers and the United Hebrew Schools now a well-publicized issue, new efforts are being made to bring both sides together so as to avoid continuing pub- lic debate. In a letter to Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig of the Associa- tion - of Hebrew Teachers, Rabbi Leizer Levin offered the services of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis to create a Beth Din to arbitrate the teachers' conflict with the UHS. UHS Voting Rule Defined According to a ruling ap- proved by the United Hebrew Schools board of directors, the spouse of a contributor to the Allied Jewish Cam- paign was eligible to sign petitions of candidates for board positions in the UHS election June 19. The peti- tion signer must be a paid-up member of the UHS. However, a voter in the election need be only a mem- ber of the UHS; a contribu- tion to the campaign is not required. Contrary to what was reported in last week's Jewish News, the spouse of a UHS member cannot vote in the member's stead. - A candidate for office must be both an AJC contributor and a member of the UHS, according to t h e United Hebrew Schools bylaws. The Concerned Parents of the UHS is asking all parents of students to pay the $10 UHS membership fee so they may cast votes at the UHS annual meeting, 8 p.m. June 19 at the UHS building in Southfield. Dinner, which is optional, will be served at 6:30 p.m. Rabbi Levin, president of the council, said "this solu- tion would be in the spirit of our historic tradition that an internal communal con- flict would be decided by a rabbinical court." Not all the teachers were in agreement with the leader- ship of the Association of Hebrew Teachers. A letter signed by five teachers and sent _ to . The Jewish.. News Monday stated: "We, United H e b r e w School teachers, are shocked and appalled that aid to Israel is threatened because of a labor dispute. The free world condemns Arab terror- ists who use Israelis as hos- tages, yet in this case all of Israel is being used as a hos- tage for the settlement of seven teachers' labor dispute. This is a despicable act. The heads of the Hebrew Teach- ers' union have acted without our knowledge and we ve- hemently protest against this irresponsible action." Rabbi Rosenzveig said the inclusion of Israel in the press conference remarks of AFL - CIO Detroit Council President Tom Turner on May 21 was made over Rosenzveig's objection. He said he regretted that Israel had been injected into the controversy. , FRANK PAUL and His ORCHESTRA "Music at its Best for Your Guests" 557-7986 In Appreciation for Your Kind Patronage SPORTIN GAL Is Going Bananas Storewide Clearance Everything in Store on SALE This Includes • Pants • Bloses • OUTFITS • SWEATERS _ -• Golf and Tennis Clothes Walk In and See Us — Walk Out Happy Lorraine Natalie Ina 2399 Coolidge, Berkley Next to Tastee Freeze 25258 Greenfield at 10 Mile, Oak Park LI 7-3300 In The Northgate Shopping Center FREE I DELIVERY DISCOUNT DRUGS For Father's Day Store Hours: '12.45 Mon. thru Sat., 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sun. & Holidays, 9 to 5 VALUE Special • Wheel Chairs • Hospital Beds • Walkers • Crutches *Commodes Birthdays By Dr. SAMUEL J. FOX 6.90 ZIZANIE (Copyright 1974, JT4, Inc.) In the Bible birthday cele- brations are mentioned only as non-Jewish observances. The birthday of the Pharaoh of Egypt seems to have been mentioned as celebrated (Genesis 40:20). Generally, there are no specific prohi- bitions against celebrating birthdays. What the Bible seems to emphasize is not the anniversary of one's birth, but rather the mile- stone of one's accomplish- ment. Thus Sarah's age is mentioned with emphasis, as is that of Moses, etc. Turner had said that if the UHS and Jewish Welfare federation leadership do not resolve the conflict with the teachers' union, the AFL- CIO will "ask its friends in the community to withhold funds from Israel Bonds, Histadrut and ()tier causes." a woman with outstanding leadership qualities and com- mitment to the community.
