But, toward the sixth month, the disintegration of the infant becomes evident. The Tay-Sachs victim has difficulty in eating, becomes listless, is lacking in body control and has attacks of blindness . .. Then becomes totally blind, goes into coma, and dies. The progress of the dread disease is irreversible, and most of its victims die of pneumonia. Dr. Lester Weiss, director of the genetic counseling clinic of Henry Ford Hos- pital, speaking at a press conference at Sinai Hospital, said there are only a few Tay-Sachs babies in the met- ropolitan area. The babies die so soon, there are only a few alive at any given time. The disease is spread, he said, by parents who are innocent carriers of the Tay- Sachs gene. "They them- selves lead normal, healthy lives," said Dr. Weiss. "But when two such people, both carriers, produce a baby, there is a 25 per cent chance that the child will be born with Tay-Sachs disease."
