Bud Vestal's Interesting Story
About 'Jerry Ford Up Close'

Vice President Gerald Ru-
dolph Ford Jr. has many
interests and concerns. He is
a Republican leader and a
conservative. He advocated
the impeachment of the
liberal Supreme Court Jus-
tice William 0. Douglas. He
concerned himself with the
Middle East
His story is told in a thor-
oughly researched biography,
"Jerry Ford: Up Close," by
a highly qualified and vet-
eran Grand Rapids reporter,
Bud Vestal.
In the Ford story, publish-
ed by Coward, McCann and
Geoghegan, Vestal gives an
account of Ford's interest in
the extensive peace efforts
made by President Nixon
and Secretary of State Kis-
singer.
He does not account at all
for Ford's interests in the
Zionist movement and his
support of Israel's freedoms.
But he does make reference
to Ford's Middle East con-
cerns. -
The role the vice president
played in demanding the im-
peachment of Supreme Court
Justice William Douglas is
elaborated upon at consider-
able length. That chapter
may prove among the most
important for historians in
viewing Ford's activities as
a member of Congress.
It is indicated in Vestal's
biography that if Ford were
to become President he
would retain Secretary of
State Henry A. Kissinger.
Also, that Ford would con-
tinue the detente with Russia
and China, would call for
big military budgets, would
not hesitate to "call a Rus-
sian bluff or fight if he be-
came convinced the time had
come to fight or surrender,"
might even be more conser-
vative than Nixon on domes-
tic social programs, and
would listen to advisers and
experts in their own fields.
"And if all he did was tell
the truth," Vestal concludes,
