C ouple's Devotion to Shul to Be Recalled at Torah Dedication
Dr. Velvel Greene, associ-
ate professor of public health
and microbiology at the Uni-
versity of Minnesota, will be

Israel Sefer Torah dedication

The Torah will be given
by the Joe Rotts, Joe Lam-
berts, Harry Korns and

of their parents, Abraham
and Anna Libowsky.
This event will begin with
a rally march from the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Rott, 14001
Oak Park Blvd. The Sefer
Torah will be carried under
a Hupa to Cong. Mishkan
Israel Nusach H'Ari Luba-

The Libowskys were born,
raised and married in Rus-
sia. Abraham c a m e to
America with the thought
that the family would be able
to follow. Reunited 11 years
later — after World War I —
the family set up residence
in the Oakland Ave. area
and belonged to a small shul
which met in a home. De-
voted to the little shul, Mrs.
Libowsky and a few ladies
collected money to purchase
the first Sefer Torah • — an
unfinished one. She made a
Torah mantle and the cur-
tains. She took care of the

shul, laundering the curtains
and keeping it clean.
As the children grew, the
Libowskys became more ac-
tive in community organiza-
tions. He organized the
Lachowitcher landsman or-
ganization, serving as its
first president, and was a
member of the Odd Fellows.
She was a member of the
Jewish Center Mothers Club
for more than 40 years, dur-
ing which she served three
terms as president and 38
years as secretary. Mrs.
Libowsky was an active
member of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah Sisterhood and also
served as secretary for the
Northern Ladies Aid Society.
After a long illness, Mr.
Libowsky died 20 years ago
on erev Rosh Hashana. His
widow asked her children to
always remember her wish
to be able to give a Sefer
Torah to a shul. On Sept. 3,
1972, also erev Rosh Has-
hana, Mrs. Libowsky died at
age 81.
In her last years, she be-
came interested in the work
of Lubavitch. Upon hearing
of a Sefer Torah that Mish-
kan Israel was attempting to
purchase, the children felt
that this opportunity to do so
in their parents' names
would be a fine tribute to
their memory.
On Sunday, their four chil-
dren, 15 grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren will
fulfill her wish.
