The origin of the tradition-
al melodies which are used
in chanting Jewish prayers
goes back to Moses at Sinai.
These melodies have been
referred to as "Skarbove"
or "Skrabove Nigunim." This
expression means "Holy Mu-
sic." Some call them "Nigu-
nim Sinai," which means the
"melodies from Sinai."
There are some who claim
that these melodies were
either composed or rear-
ranged by the famous author-
ity on Jewish - -custom during
medieval times known as the
"Maharil." This is because
he is quoted as saying that
the customs of Jewish com-
munities are holy and not
subject to change. According
to him, one should never
change the traditional melo-
dies of prayer under any cir-
cumstances.
