Rabbi Yosef Condemns
Letter-Bomb Sent to Goren
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ov-
adia Yosef expressed "sharp
revulsion" over a letter-
bomb addressed to Ash-
kenazic Chief Rabbi Shlomo
Goren, which police believe
may have been sent by re-
ligious zealots who support
Yosef in his most recent dis-
pute with Goren.
The lethal letter, which
Mrs. Goren turned over to
police Monday, contained a
note stating "You • have
started trouble for Yosef so
you will die."
The feud which has sim-
mered between the two chief
rabbis since their elections
two years ago flared anew
last month when Rabbi
Goren tried to fire Rabbi
Shimon Efrati, head of the
chief rabbinate's kashrut de-
partment. Yosef blocked the
move, and Efrati kept his
job. But he is recognized
only by Rabbi Yosef's sup-
porters and not by the Chief
Rabbinate Council, which is
made up mainly of Goren
supporters.
Goren appealed to Yosef in
a Shavuot eve radio address
to meet with him and make
peace. Yosef rejected the
plea because it was made
through the media, not di-
rectly to him.
Volunteer Treats
Ma'alot Victims
SAFED, Israel—Dr. Cyril
Monty, a noted London ortho-
pedic surgeon, came to Safed
Hospital three weeks ago to
help Israeli doctors catch up
on the backlog of wounded
soldiers needing special
orthopedic care.
"The recent fighting on the
Golan," says Dr. ,Monty, "is
of such a nature that most of
the wounded are orthopedic
cases. I have organized a
group of my colleagues, a
rota so to speak. Each of
them will spend from two to
four weeks at a time in Is-
rael, on a volunteer basis. I
came first—I wanted to make
it easier for those who fol-
lowed."
By chance, Dr. Monty was
in the hospital May 15 when
the news came through that
Arab terrorists were holding
86 children hostage in the
Netiv Meir Religious School
in the Galilee village of
Ma'alot.
The receiving area was
manned by a crew of physi-
cians and nurses who treated
a dozen of Ma'alot's wound-
ed.
