Girl's Compassion Recalled

There was, for a time, an
angel of mercy at Ma'alot-
until she, too, died' at the
hands of Arab terrorists.
She was Sarah Madar, a
15-year-old schoolgirl on va-
cation.
Her story, which appeared
in an Israeli newspaper, was
sent by her grandfather
Arieh Kaufman to his friend,
.Detroiter Harry Norber. The
latter translated from the
Hebrew for The Jewish
News. Sarah tried to comfort
the students trapped in the
school by reading them
stories, telling them to stay
calm and involving them in
singing.
However, by the end of the
day, the children were still
frightened despite her tries

one will hurt us, don't be
afraid." As the panic in-
creased, the children recited
the Shema.
Sarah, noting how des-
perate they had become,
asked one of the terrorists
if the children could hold
onto each other for security.
The terrorists allowed it and
offered to spare Sarah's life,
but she refused.
"We will live together or
we will die together," she,
said. Besides, she said, her
life would be meaningless if
she were spared while all
her friends were killed.
She was one of the first to
be killed by the terrorists.

The recent Arab terrorist
massacres in Kiryat Shemona
and Ma'alot reopened the
happening at Deir Yassin, 26
years -ago in April 1948. The
story presented in the Arab
propaganda has been grossly
distorted and used as an ex-
cuse for their brutal terror-
ism. What were the actual
events that led up to the
attack on Deir Yassin?
When- the Arabs decided
to Defy by force of arms the
United Nations partition res-
olution of Nov. 29, 1947,
which called for the establish-
ment of a Jewish state in
Palestine, local Arab military
forces, strengthened by regu-
lar army units from Iraq,
chose Jerusalem as the main
target for their attack. The
Arabs made no secret of their
intention to starve the city
into submission. The key
Arab military bases on the
road to the city were the vil-
lages of Castel and Deir
Yassin. The Arabs were con-
stantly harassing and sniping
at the suburbs of Jerusalem;
Givat Shaul, Kiryat Moshe
and Beit Hakerem, from
Deir Yassin, in particular,
was a military necessity of
the road to Jerusalem was to
be opened for Jewish convoys
bearing food and water to
the besieged city.
At dawn on April 10, 1948,
a truck equipped with a loud-
speaker pulled up at the vil-
liage of Deir Yassin. It broad-
cast a warning in Arabic to
the civilian inhabitants of
the village, calling on them
to leave for their own safety
because Deir Yassin is a base
for Arab military units. Two

hundred villagers heeded the
warning and assembled on
the lower Slopes of the ,hill.
None of these people were
hurt or molested.
The Arabs remaining in
Deir Yassin displayed white
flags of surrender but when
the Irgun and Stern units ad-
vanced toward the houses,
they were met with a hail of
bullets. Each house (stone
built) had to be taken in
hand-to-hand combat. The
Jewish fighters were forced
to use the only tactic effec-
tive in house-to-house fight-
ing, thus causing many casu-
alties and among them, civil-
ians. The Irgun and Stern
units sustained 41 casualties.
The fact that, in their de-
sire to spare innocent lives,
the Jewish fighters had fore.
fone the element of surprise
in their attack by warning
the civilians to leave the vil-
lage, was confirmed in a
pamphlet issued by the sec-
retariat-general of the Arab
League. On page 10 of this
pamphlet entitled "Israel's
Aggression," we read: "On
the night of April 9, 1948, the
peaceful village of Deir Yas-
sin, in the suburbs of Jeru-
salem, was surprised by loud-
speakers calling upon the in-
habitants of the village to
evacuate immediately."
As for the Arab contention
that the Jewish attackers of
Deir Yassin had invaded the
village with the intention of
slaughtering its civilian popu-
lation, the April 9, 1955 issue
of Al-Urdun, a Jordanian
daily, carried the following
noteworthy statement by

mona and Ma'alot and Deir
Yassin are equated by calling
each a massacre.
Every child knows that the
three Arab terrorists who
entered K i r y at Shemona,
went there with the intention
of killing as many Jews as
possible—and they succeeded
in killing 18 and wounding
15. The three Arab terrorists
in Ma'alot killed 25 and
wounded 70, and before ar-
riving in the town killed an
Arab woman. The people of
Kiryat Shemona and Ma'alot
did not harass or shoot at
any Arab village or any
Arab person. They were just
living their peaceful day-to-
day existence. Thus it is clear
that the terrorist attacks on
the two Israeli villages were
unprovoked and that the

Spain Bans Neo-Fascist Youth
Parley Slated in Barcelona

NEW YORK (JTA) — Re-
ports received from Spain in-
dicate that CEDADE, the
neofascist movement in
Europe will not be allowed to
hold its scheduled youth con-
gress in Barcelona on June
29 and 30.
According to a news item
which appeared. in Informa-
ciones, the Spanish daily,
dated May 16, the fascist
character of the movement
was responsible for the civil
government of Barcelona's
cancellation of the permit to
meet.
Information and documents
about CEDADE's Nazi affili-
ation and anti-Semitic activi-
ties were furnished to leaders
of the Spanish-Jewish com-
munity by the European
Affairs Department of the
Anti-Defamation League and
released here.
CEDADE's attempt to re-
fute Spanish press charges
concerning their fascist orien-
tation was exploded by an ex-
pose appearing in the popu-
lar Spanish daily Pueblo dat-
ed May 18. The writer of the
expose, Pedro Rodriguez, cit-
ed a document, supplied by
ADL, in which James K.
Warner, the leader of the
California - based Christian
Crusade Church in the U.S.
