CHICAGO—The managing
editor of the Rocky Mountain
News apologized in a front-
page story last week for an
anti- Semitic advertisement
which ran in his paper.

The editor, Michael Balfe
Howard, apologized for the
ad the day after it appeared,
according to the Chicago Tri-
bune. Howard said the ad
appeared "beacuse we were
careless. That's right: We
weren't doing our job.'

The advertisement, which
offere a book entitled "Jew-
Man sins always only ish Secrets of Success" from
against himself.—Talmud.
the International Publishing

Higher Interest

Co. in Los Angeles, prompted
thousands of complaining
phone calls.
The ad, which stated that
Jews "have influence, promi-
nence, power and wealth dra-
matically out of proportion
to their small number,"
hinted that this was caused
by a secret conspiracy. The
ad promised to reveal a sec-
ret for success in a book
for $5.
Sheldon Steinhauser, Rocky
Mountain Area director of
the Anti-Defamation League,
said he got a copy of the
book and that it only con-
tained 40 pages. Although he
was displeased that the ad
appeared at all, he expressed
praise for Howard who, he
said, volunteered immediately
to write an apology.
"To attempt to apologize
for our laxness is in no way
consoling or compensatory to
those who have been offended
by the advertisement," How-
ard wrote. "Nor, unfortunate.
ly, is there any way to appeal
to the sick minds that will
feed upon the racism inherent
in the ad's copy."
Howard
whose . wife is
Jewish, although he never
mentioned it in his apology,
said he was appalled by the
ad. He said he learned the

ad was placed through the
Scripps-Howard branch ad-
vertising office in Los An-
geles, and that apparently
the employe there accepted
the ad without reading it.
He is a member of the
Howard family which is part
owner of the Scripps-Howard
newspaper chain.)
The ad, Howard said, was
taken out by a Charles S.
Howard (no relation) who
gave a West Covina, Calif.
address. The address was
traced to a Los Angeles post
office, and the area telephone
book showed no listing for
the International Publishing
Co.

The shortage will be some-
