The position of Ombudsman was established in the new
Charter for the City of Detroit which is to become effec-
tive July 1, 1974. Appointment to the position would be
for a period of 10 years. Starting annual salary is
$34,800 plus fringe benefits.
Responsibilities include investigation of complaints relat-
ing to acts of non-elective officers and employees of city
agencies, and taking appropriate actions toward resolving
complaints .and providing redress to aggrieved persons;
the- undertaking of self-initiated investigation of admin-
istrative acts, rules, regulations, ordinances, statutes and
policies that aggrieve any citizen or group; initiating
and recommending policy and/or statutory changes to
allow the city service agencies to better serve citizens.
The position requires the ability to critically analyze
problems and develop alternative solutions; to work to-
ward resolving conflicts; to develop and maintain effec-
tive relations with all segments of the Community. The
position requires knowledge of the City of Detroit and its
governmental processes and structure. The applicant
should be willing to make a long term commitment to
making city government better serve citizens. Applicants
must be Detroit residents, at least 18 years of age and
U.S. Citizens. Final date for receipt of applicants is June
10, 1974.
Applicants will be evaluated by the Ombudsman Search
Committee established by the City of Detroit Common
Council. Final selection will be made by the Common
Council.
