NEWTON BERLIN at a
local racetrack saw a fellow
raising his fingers before
each race . . . Newtie bet on
them and won seven in a row
... Before the eighth, he went
over to thank the fellow .. .
and discovered the guy was
a deaf mute . . . He had
been using sign language
while talking to someone!

"HOW C 0 M E," Lillian
Cornweiss (Sol), hostess at
her 7-year-old daughter
Susie's birthday party, asked
a little girl in attendance,
"that your younger brother
is so shy? He hasn't moved
from that corner all after-
noon." . . . "He isn't shy at
all," answered the little girl.
"He's never had on a neck-
tie before—and he thinks he's
tied to something."

NOTE FOUND IN A local
household . . . penciled by a
9-year-old girl . . . "Good-
by family. You all hate me.
I love you, anyhow. P.S. In
case of fire, I'm in the attic."
BIG LAUGH GETTER by
food broker Henry Cohen is
about the man who was in-
vited to deliver a talk to the
Jewish Home for the Aged
. . . His topic was Lincoln's
Gettysburg Address . . .
When he arrived, the fellow
realized that these people
would not understand him
. . . He asked one of the resi-
dents to act as interpreter
. . . When he started out,
"Four score and seven years
ago," the ,interpreter resident
said in Yiddish, "Mit ziben
un achtzik yor t z u r i c h"
(meaning 87 years ago) . . .
The man continued, "our
forefathers" . . and the
interpreter interrupted with
"Unzere feer tates" . . . etc.
etc. all through the entire
Gettysburg address . . . Re-
cently, Henry and his Chin-
ese secretary, Cindy, decided
to play a joke on next-door
office neighbor, Max Sosin
. . . He called Max in on the
pretense that Cindy was very
upset, feeling she was dis-
criminated against in the
building because she is Chin-
ese . . . Henry then asked if
Max wanted to hear the
whole story, to which he, of
course, said yes, in disbelief
that such a sweet and charm-
ing girl like Cindy should
feel this way . . . Each of
them pulled out a sheet of
paper and Henry started by
saying, "Four score and sev-
en years ago" . . . Suddenly
from Cindy's mouth came,
'Mit ziben uns achtzik yor
tzurich." ... Henry had writ-
ten it out for her phonetical-
ly so that the joke could be
played on a stunned but
laughing Max.
FAVORITE STORIES . . .
by Harold Haber . . about
the father giving the hand of
his only daughter in matri-
mony to a brash college grad
named Michael . . . Just as
she was ducking out for her
honeymoon, he said to her,
"Well, now I've set your
young man up in a business
of his own. Is there anything
else I can do for you?" . . .
"There is one thing," mur-
mured his daughter with just
a trace of diffidence." "Mi-
chael would like you to buy
him out."
Lou Freeman of Parsons
Ave., Southfield, scored his
first hole-in-one in 30 years
of golf May 25 on the 15th
hole at Shenandoah Golf and
Country Club. He used a four
wood on the 171-yard hole.
