Meanwhile, a Soviet char- acterization of an interna- tional scientific seminar as a "provocative action of cer- tain circles" was rejected by a spokesman for the interna- tional secretaries of the sem- inar. Prof. Edward Stern of the University of Michigan af- firmed that the seminar is "a purely scientific gather- ing, being conducted in ac- cordance with international scientific standards and is in no way a provocative action," and that this characterization represents "a distortion of the character and purposes of the seminar." Dr. Stern, in pointing to the world-famous scientists who constitute the international board, of sponsors and advis- ers, stated that this is "evi- dence of the international sci- entific community's support for the right of all scientists not only to freely pursue their inquiries, but also to freely communicate in the open f or um of scientific ex- change." Dr. Stern added: "Our So- viet Jewish colleagues who are ostracized by official So- viet science and denied ac- cess to normal scientific channels because they seek to emigrate to Israel, need the opportunity to exchange sci- entific information with their colleagues outside the Soviet Union." Intermittent e x p 1 osions rocked the plant, but a police spokesman said there were no casualties and that an initial investigation showed no signs of arson or sabotage. An Israel police spokesman said the fire was not the first that has broken out in the munitions plant owned by the Sultarn Co., an affili- ate of Histadrut's Koor In• dustries. (The Palestine News Agency in Damascus said that saboteurs had destroy- ed an Israeli arms factory and the country's largest plastics plant in two success- ful commando operations. The report claimed that an unknown number of Israelis were killed or wounded and that the commandos returned safely to their base. The news agency said the plastics plant was located in Carmiel, southeast of Haifa.) DOZOR Bus. 354-3000 TORONTO—Rabbi Benja- min Friedberg, 46, the newly named senior rabbi of Beth Tzedec Congregration, will be returning home in the midst of controversy—partly revolving around himself, partly around his predecessor Rabbi Stuart Rosenberg. Rabbi Friedberg's appoint- ment by the board of Beth Tzedec was in defiance of an order by the Rabbinical Assembly that he not go to the synagogue as a candidate for the pulpit. As a result of his defiance, he has been ex- pelled from the RA. The Rabbinical Assembly had forbidden any rabbi to teach or preach there until a dispute between the congre- gation's board and Rabbi Rosenberg had been settled. Rosenberg was fired in Jan- uary 1973 and filed a lawsuit, which is believed headed for the courts. Educated in Toronto schools, Rabbi Friedberg re- ceived his rabbinical training in the U.S. He returned to Toronto to become interim rabbi at Beth Tzedec prior to Rabbi Rosenberg's being en- gaged as senior rabbi. Rabbi Friedberg, who will leave Ottawa after 13 years in the pulpit of Agudath Is- rael Synagogue, is an out- spoken liberal regarding re- ligious matters and has a reputation as an intellectual. He was one of four finalists for the Beth Tzedec post.
