The center of Jewish life
on East Broadway has been
for decades the imposing 10-
story building of the Jewish
Daily Forward, the largest
Jewish daily newspaper, now
in its 77th year of existence.
In moving from East
Broadway to the center of
New York, the Forward does
not intend to make any
change in its policy. Its pres-
ent editor, Simon Weber, held
executive editorial positions
on the paper for many years.
The innovations he intro-
duced as editor-in-chief—in-
cluding an English page pre-
senting the best articles of
the week which appeared in
the paper in Yiddish — have
made the Forward even more
of a family newspaper, where
every member of the family
can find interesting material
to read.
The Forward has always
strived to have the best Yid-
dish writers and journalists
on its staff. They included

BROOKLINE, Mass.-- Dr.
Shlomo Bardin has been
named 1974 recipient of the
Philip W. Lown Distinguished
Service Award of Hebrew
Colleg e, Brookline. The
medal, to be presented at
commencement exercises
June 9 cites Dr. Bardin's
leadership in the furtherance
of the cultural and educa-
tional vitality of the Ameri-
can Jewish community."
He is founding director of
the Brandeis Camp Institute
and was principal of pre-
state Palestine's first tech-
nical high school, at the
Haifa Technion.
He also pioneered the es-
tablishment of the Haifa
Nautical School when in all
of Palestine there was not
a single Jewish sailor, nor
a single Jewish boat. The
first nautical school was es-
tablished in Haifa in 1936,.
and Dr. Bardin was its
principal.
With the establishment of
the state of Israel, the gov-
ernment took over the Haifa
Nautical School and moved
it to Acre as a government
naval and nautical school.
Dr. Bardin, who received
his MA and PhD degrees
from Columbia University, is
the author of "Pioneer Youth
in Palestine" and "Jews and
the Sea."

such novelists as Sholom
Asch and Zalman Schneour,
outstanding poets as Abra-
ham Reisin and Mani Leib,
and other great literary tal-
ents. Isaac Bashevis-Singer
started his career in America
by working in the Forward
where his novels are pub-
lished in installments in Yid-
dish before they appear in
English. So did Elie Wiesel,
who began to work in the
Forward when he came to
this country.
Moving with the Forward
from East Broadway to the
new location in mid-Manhat-
tan is also the Workmen's
Circle which for decades oc-
cupied two floors in the For-
ward Building.
