The Jewish Community
Council contacted the area's
Orthodox congregations to in-
form them of efforts to
place Michigan in the Central
Standard Time Zone. A peti-
tion campaign so to amend
the State constitution has
been launched by a coalition
of state groups.
Council has been opposed
to Daylight Saving Time be-
cause of the inconvenience to
observant Jewish families.
Alvin Kushner, executive
direct or , explained that
"Michigan's geographic posi-
tion being on the western
edge of the Eestern Time
Zone, it is estimated that the
sun sets over 40 minutes
later here than it does on
the eastern shore. This delay,
in addition to Daylight Say-
ing Time, is tantamount to
double Daylight Saving Time
for Michigan residents."
Information and petitions
were forwarded to Orthodox
congregations for circulation.
Subject to action by the
executive committee, reaf-
firming Council's past posi-
tion, the -entire community
will be contacted.

petition drive, call the Coun-
cil office, 962-1880, or the

Has Assurances
U. S. Will Intervene
for Jews in Syria
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Rabbi
Israel Miller, chairman of
tide Conference of Presidents
of Major American Jewish
Organizations, said he had
assurances that the U. S.
government would intervene
on humanitarian grounds on
behalf of the persecuted Jew_
ish community in Syria.
The plight of Syrian Jews
will become the central point
of activity of all Jewish
bodies in the U. S. whose
ultimate goal is the emigra-
tion of all Jews from Syria,
Rabbi Miller declared at a
press conference here.
Rabbi Miller questioned the
authenticity of a letter pur-
ported to have been written
by U. S. Secretary of State
Henry A. Kissinger to an
Israeli woman formerly im-
prisoned in Syria to the ef-
fect that the situation of
Syrian Jews was "a Syrian
internal matter." He said
that, quite to the contrary,
the Conference of Presidents
was convinced that U. S.
policy is that human prob-
lems have no boundaries.
Rabbi Miller said that
