Rome, Milan Open Youth Centers for European, Mideast Refugees

NEW YORK—Two centers
geared to the special needs
of refugee youth have been
opened in Italy, one in Rome
and the other in Milan, it was
reported by Samuel L. Ha-
ber, executive vice chairman
of the Joint Distribution Corn-
mittee.
The center in Rome caters
mainly to 18-25 year-old Rus-
sian Jews. They are among
some 600 Russian Jews wait-
ing for arrangements to be
completed for resettlement
in the U.S. and other West-
ern countries. Migration pro-
cedures are handled by the
'United Hias Service, and the
C provides food, shelter,
dical care and other serv-
ices.
The community center in
Milan was designed by the
Milan Jewish community to
draw together heterogeneous
groups of young people who
arrived during three decades
of Jewish immigration from
Eastern Europe and the Mid-
dle East, Haber said. Only
about 20 per cent of the 10,-
000 Jews in Milan are of
Italian origin. The rest came

The program in Rome is
being financed jointly by the

The Rome Jewish community
has made premises available
at its Kadima youth center
for four afternoons a week.
Conducting the program are
two part-time youth leaders,
one a Russian-speaking Is-

Jew of Libyan origin. Guid-
ing and helping them are
the JDC consultant on centers
and youth work, and the di-

Among the activities will
