Day Schools
Eyed for Small
Communities
\
/ ,
NEW YORK --- Nearly 400
principals and administrators
of Hebrew day schools in
North America resolved at
an annual convention to es-
tablish schools in the smaller
Jewish communities as well
as to integrate in the cur-
riculum both history and
current events.
was emphasized that
, es such as the Ma'alot
Massacre, UN votes and
Watergate belong rightfully
within the religious curricu-
lum where moral values are
discussed and a religious
world view structured.
The annual five-day con•
vention of the day school
principals and administrators
which met in Atlantic City
was under the auspices of

Day Schools. Delegates noted
the growth of the Hebrew
'day school movement from
about 30 schools in 1945 Io a
total, in 1974, of 463 schools
in 34 states and 5 Canadian
provinces.
The agenda of the Hebrew
day school movement for the
next year, as proposed by
the convention, also includes
a national enrollment cam-
paign, greater financial sup-
port from welfare funds
within the Jewish commun-
ity and better job security
and benefits for faculty
along with increased profes-
sionalism for both principals
and administrators.
In a convention report, it
was pointed out that today
every community with a
Jewish population of 7,500 or
over already has a Hebrew
day school.
Special awards were pre-
sented to Dr. Anthony Ter-
ino, director of the division
of school supervision, New
York State Education De-
partment, Albany, and to Dr.
Seymour Lachman, presi-
dent, board of education,
New York City, for their
achievements on behalf of
education.
