Conservative Head Assails End of 'Ethos of Merit .

KIAMESHA LAKE — The president of the Rabbinical
abandonment of the "ethos Assembly. Rabbi Waxman, a
of merit" by so many Ameri- graduate of the Jewish Theo-
cans, including Jews, wass
called a "fallacious pseudo-
equality" by Dr. Gerson D.
Cohen in an address to the
74th annual convention of
Rabbinical Assembly.
The chancellor of the Jew-
ish Theological Seminary of
America told his fellow rab-
bis that many third world
movements seek to improve
the plight of the underpri-
vileged by adopting a pseudo-
equality that corrupts those
who are the supposed benefi-
ciaries of the sought-for bet-
ter society.
Dr. Cohen's warning fol-
lowed the induction of Rabbi
Mordecai Waxman of Temple

logical Seminarry, succeeds
Rabbi Judah Nadich of the
Park Avenue Synagogue,
New York, who just com-
pleted a two-year term as
president.
Charging that many Ameri-
can Jews have actually en-
gaged in a conspiracy of
silence to accept a new ver-
sion of the quota system, Dr.
Cohen said:
"Departure from the ethos
of merit has become the
modern pseudo-morality that
wraps itself in the verbiage
of the prophets .
"Race is indeed a problem,
but we do not improve the
plight of anyone by attempt-
ing to bribe the disadvant-
aged and thus really manipu-
late them to assuage of our
consciences and serve our
ends, rather than treating
them as our brothers in hu-

man dignity," Dr. Cohen said.
"Such responses not only cor-
rupt those who are supposed
to be the beneficiaries, but
also demoralize us and our
whole society."

He pointed out that the
real crisis of the American
Jewish community is "the
steady attrition of confidence
in the value of Jewish tradi-
tion. The function of Jewish
eduction and of religious in-
stitutions is to reinforce con-
f i d e n c e, inhibited their
growth, their impact and
their outreach."

'American Friends Service Committee
Should Be Listed Among Israel's Foes'

Editor, The Jewish News:
The article in The Jewish
News by Boris Smolar on
anti- Israel propagandists
(May 10) failed to cite the
American Friends Service
Committee, which has been
the most harmful of all.
Church and "peace
groups", students and mem-
bers of the news media have
been persuaded in an anti-
Israel stance by that AFSC.
The American Friends Serv-
ice Committee has argued
that Russia and the United
States must impose "peace"
in the Middle East and that
the United States should stop
helping Israel and let the
United Nations provide for
Israel's security. Apparently
they make such malicious
suggestions because they be-
lieve their idea of world
peace is more important than
the existence of Israel and
the Jewish people.
What is the most shocking
about the American Friends
Service Committee, which is
a Quaker organization, is that
they condone the violence of
the terrorists. They rational-
ize — to arrive at this posi-

tion which is contrary to
their traditional abhorrence
of violence — by explaining
that "injustice is a form of
violence." According to this
new modern view, violence
may be necessary to achieve
justice.
Of course, the AFSC never
puts it so bluntly as to say
that the ends justify the
means. They Just do not
bother to condemn the vio-
lence but instead condemn
what they have decided is
the cause.
Thus, according to the
American Friends Service
Committee, the terrorists are
not criminals, but rather
"Arab resistance leaders"
only fighting to achieve their
"dream of a democratic
humane state of Jews, Arabs
and Christians" and are not
responsible for the mass mur-
der and extortion that they
practice. They have been
provoked.
The AFSC puts it thusly:
"The more violent the be-
havior the more urgent it is
to search for the reasons be-
hind it . . ." Naturally, the
Jews themselves must be to
blame, otherwise the terror-
ists would have no reason to
do them harm. Following
that kind of reasoning, the
6,000,000 Jews of Europe
must have been guilty of
something or otherwise the
Nazis would not have slaugh-
tered them!
How is it that the AFSC
never seems to be aware that
Jerusalem flourishes as a
unified city open to all; that
within Israel there is an in-
creasing spirit of understand-
ing between Arabs and Jews;
that the West Bank and Gaza
are enjoying new prosperity
and freedom and the notor-
ious Arab refugee camps
within that area that the
United Nations allowed to be
taken over by the terrorists
have been replaced with vil-
lages with proper roads,
electricity, water supply, sew-
age systems, medical facili-
ties and their own governing
councils and whose people
are now employed?
