JERUSALEM (ZINS—Gen.
`Motti' Gur was not the only
officer under consideration
to fill the top command posi-
tion of Israel's armed forces,
following upon the resigna-
tion of Gen. David Elazar.
Gen. Israel Tal was strongly
advocated by a number of
cabinet ministers, including
Haim Bar-Lev and Aharon
Yariv.
Gen. Gur's candidacy, how-
ever, was strongly supported
by Moshe Dayan and Golda
Meir. At the last moment,
however, Gen. Tal's backers
decided not to make a con-
test of it for tactical reasons
connected with their position
in the government.
Gur is a close friend of
Dayan and it is believed this
was an important factor in
his being chosen as chief-of-
staff.

He's a professional truck driver's professional. And
he's serving as Michigan's Driver of the Year for 1974.
Secretary of State Richard Austin presented him with
that honor in February. Bill has spent thelast 34 years
driving ali kinds of trucks, mostly in city traffic, cover-
ing over 1 14 million miles all without an accident.

Wewanted you to meet Bill, especially during Nation-
al Transportation Week, because without him, and the
millions of other truck drivers, Michigan would not have
the benefit of competing in the market places of the
world.
